The Judiciary bill has significant reforms, including a warrant requirement. The Intelligence bill is a wolf in sheep's clothing -- it would significantly expand warrantless surveillance. If you're in the US, now's a key time to contact Congress! EFF's got a form that makes it easy, or see Get FISA Right's post for phone numbers and a short script.

Hi everyone!

I'm curious to know which slicer you guys use.

I've been using the Creality slicer, but it seems like it pretty consistently crashes, and I've tried Cura but the print seemed stringy despite using the same settings.

How are Orca or Prusa?

"The mammoth climate law that serves as the linchpin of President Joe Biden’s economics program has ignited a new zeal among leaders around the world for the kind of winner-picking, subsidy-flush governing that has been out of fashion in many countries for the past 40 years.”

“The Inflation Reduction Act’s mix of lavish support for clean energy technologies and efforts to box out foreign competitors is also promoting a kind of green patriotism — and even some politicians on the right, at least outside the U.S., say that’s a climate message they can sell.”

Breaking news: in one of the most productive countries / economies in the entire history of humanity, the majority of people creating that productivity do not get to enjoy the rewards of that productivity.

same as it ever was.

“Record Rent Burdens Batter Low-Income Life”

More tenants than ever spend half or more of their income for shelter, leaving less for everything else, taking an emotional toll and leaving some without a place to call their own.

Posting to raise awareness of this behavior with kbin. Maybe it's something Ernest can address in the ActivityPub rewrite, maybe it's something that doesn't need to be (or can be) addressed at all.

On Mastodon, if you don't like your instance or it's in the process of shutting down, you can migrate your account to another instance. I was aware of this feature, but I hadn't considered how such a move federates to kbin, until now.

I had blocked a user of a niche Mastodon instance, and then they migrated to a larger instance. After the migration, I started seeing their posts again, with my blocklist only containing the old account, not the new one.

Now to my knowledge, this feature of Mastodon is not a standard component of ActivityPub. I think it's a great feature actually, but I'm concerned that enables a sort of harassment whereby an attacker can harass someone, get blocked, migrate to another instance, and continue harassing their target. This feature being non-standard, I don't know how it gets broadcast to other instances, let alone if/how kbin should handle it.

Should kbin automatically update blocklists with the newly migrated account name and instance name? That feels like the ideal solution, but I don't know how feasible it is. Just wanted to open this up for discussion and awareness.

Climate change is worsening the planet's biodiversity crises, making environments more deadly for thousands of species and accelerating the precipitous decline in the number of plants and animals on Earth, according to an international organization that tracks species health.

Species of salmon and turtles are among those facing a decline as the planet warms.

Atlantic salmon isn't yet threatened with extinction, but its population dropped by nearly a quarter from 2006 to 2020, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which tracks biodiversity around the globe, said on Monday. It's now considered near threatened. They live in fewer places and face human-created hazards like dams and water pollution. Climate change is making it harder for the fish to find food and easier for alien species to compete, according to the group. Although there are some signs of hope: their numbers ticked up in Maine this past year.

The news was announced at the United Nations climate conference in the United Arab Emirates on Monday. Leaders of the IUCN updated their Red List of Threatened Species, a tracker of biodiversity around the globe. It was mainly bad news. The list includes information on 157,000 species, about 7,000 more than last year's update.
