Those of you among us who remember that Don Imus used to be a thing, why was he so influential and how did he slip completely from memory?

We all either love horror films, or hate horror films. What's that film that kept you up at night? The one that you re-watch all the time? The one that made you groan at 'the big reveal'?

Favourite: Evil Dead (2013). It was just insane, wonderfully gory and made you wanna squirm.

Least favourite: Sharkenstein (2016). Watching this film, I gained a new appreciation for Meet The Spartans.

I'm getting really tired of trying to run away from big tech, only to be ensnared again by the greed and/or naivety of sites who ultimately cave to the whims of big tech.

Mastodon has already caved, and the silence of lemmy's and kbin's developers over this matter isn't exactly reassuring. Since I more or less still have my bags packed from leaving reddit, what are some other communities I could try that would be more resilient to corporate encroachment?

Apologies if I missed one that has already been held. But I saw a member census of beehaw, which was really interesting. I'm not suggesting gathering of any personally identifying info, but more generally getting a sense of who is here on kbin.

Hi, can you help me with a math problem kbin? It's algebra, and it's been a long time since I've had to do it. Can you explain to me how simplifying the terms comes out to 9/2 in the pictured equation please?

Seemed like emojis in posts / comments would get downvoted to oblivion on Reddit. I don’t see the same thing on Kbin (or other instances / services).

Not that I’m complaining; nice to not be inundated with beans.

I’d assume with federation the active posts would mostly be the same on both.

Edit: I think it may partly have to do with how voting works differently between Lemmy and Kbin.

Introverts: which ones have you enjoyed the most?

See title.

I constantly feel like any interaction with a sales person is just a big con. Whether it's a car, insurance, an apartment, internet, or a specialty item that I'm interested in but not an expert on. I always feel completely lost and uncomfortable and like no matter what decision I make I'm making the wrong one.

Personally, this one:

-The newlyweds had theoretically been together for 5 years but saw each other so little that they were almost strangers to each other.
-The bridegroom discovered only belatedly that the one he was going to marry was a spoiled child submissive to her mother.
-The groom wanted children and the bride said she would think about it, but still hadn't made up her mind on the wedding day.
-Everyone was originally supposed to sleep at a friend's house, who suddenly put the dishes in the big ones, but the mother of the bride decided on a whim that no, her daughter would not sleep in said house, although obviously without notifying the owners.
-3 people (the bride, her mother and a guest) ended up spending the night in the village hall. The mother slept glued to her daughter and the guest had to stay awake all night for lack of a place to lie down.
-During the feast, the guests were of different origins and gathered in homogeneous ethnic groups who stared at one another.
-The DJ only played Senegalese music, which obviously only appealed to guests of Senegalese origin.
-The mother of the bride has a disconcertingly fragile ego, preferring to refuse to answer a question rather than admit that she does not know.

Whether you started with a 2600 and a joystick in your hand, an N64 with a blistered palm or building your first PC in your teens, what is that one video game you've played at some point that to this day sits at the top of your list.

Mine has to be Trader Joe's line of frozen Indian Food. The Palak Paneer is amazing!

Over many years of using messageboards, forums and reddit, I've had the 'search, don't ask' ethos drilled into me, the idea being that creating new threads to ask simple questions is a bad thing because it decreases the signal-to-noise ratio of content.

But now that we're trying to grow a new platform, it occurs to me that a lot of appeal in established platforms is the searchable index of knowledge that has come out of people's questions being asked and answered.

In light of that, do you think we should be creating question posts more enthusiastically to build up our library of information, even if it might be stuff that could potentially be answered by doing a reddit search?

Logged in a few minutes ago and noticed that reputation in my account was much higher then before. Guessing it might be counted now.

What is the possible reason why upvotes in Kbin do not add up to the overall Reputation, but downvotes do?

241

I've gone back and noticed that sometimes a handful of people had responded to a previous comment and I never realized it.

As it stands, it seems you only get notifications if people actually manually mention your username. Is there any method to get post/thread reply notifications?

I love KFC, when me and my family are poor(and still are) i would go and eat KFC like almost every single week and it was cheap here + Delicious aswell. I loved KFC Fries the Most, it was so delicious. If i had enough money, i would buy enough of KFC and be a fat man in the week LMAO

So what fast food do you love?

I really do like KBin and Lemmy and the fediverse on the whole, but development is still young and the userbase still growing. KBin is still basically early access, and Lemmy is buggy. I spent alot of time in reddit and I'm feeling the pain of trying to ween myself from it. Just wanted to here community perspectives and see how other's are taking it.

For me, I feel a bit of a sore hollow spot for what reddit used to be and watching it implode is not fun for me.

I ask because I've been doing a lot of research the last few weeks and Google search has really let me down. I've been finding better results on DuckDuckGo and Bing. Is this a recent thing with Google or am I out of the loop? Any other search recommendations?

Edit: In no particular order, some recommended alternatives to Google
SearXNG
Whoogle
Ecosia
Brave
Dogpile
DuckDuckGo
Kagi
Swiss Cows
Qwant
Bing

I'm a little confused about how the upvote/downvote system works as related to your reputation on KBin. Can someone explain?

246

When the little "active users" photos rotate, I begin to feel I'm a cliche, as it seems like solidly 50% of you look the same.

Why is no one using CSS to make their magazine's visual appearances more unique? That was the main draw of old Reddit for me.

(I mean I am, but that is why I asked)

Curious on some replies here. I always hear having bees go extinct would be horrible for us. Curious if that’s the worse?

There used to be a water park in my hometown that had a bunch of slides and a wave pool. I used to go there all the time as a kid, and even went there as a senior on a trip. I went to birthday parties there, sometimes.

It closed in 2020 and never reopened because they had apparently been avoiding paying bills for years. It wasn’t just the pandemic. It was visible from the freeway, so I watched it slowly being demolished over the next couple years any time I passed by.

I haven’t found a water park that really compared to it yet. Most are either too small or part of a larger theme park, which is fine. It just seemed like the fact that it exclusively was a water park allowed it to focus more on the atmosphere and types of slides it had.
