Bill would end funds for ‘any project that hasn’t laid track after a decade’

U.S. Rep. Mike Garcia (R-Santa Clarita) announced last week that he has introduced H.R. 9308, which he has dubbed the “No Frankenrail Act.”

I was a bit pessimistic about this being possible, but to see that we did this in the 1984 Olympics without any light rail is pretty amazing to hear.

TL;DR; they're converting land which would be at risk of flooding into marshes to serve as a buffer and reduce the impact on other nearby land.

After personally participating in the forced displacement of homeless people in a Los Angeles encampment, Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday threatened to withhold funding from counties that don’t sufficiently crack down on the unhoused.

Buoyed by the right-wing U.S. Supreme Court’s recent City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson ruling — which was welcomed by Newsom and other Democratic leaders like San Francisco Mayor London Breed who filed amicus briefs in the case — the governor issued an executive order last month directing officials to clear out homeless encampments, which have proliferated amid rampant economic inequality and stratospheric housing prices in the nation’s most populous state.

After taking part in a Thursday sweep of an encampment in Mission Hills in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley, Newsom declared: “I want to see results… If we don’t see demonstrable results, I’ll start to redirect money.”

California's state-run offset systems were built with a buffer pool of additional forest area which was supposed to be adequate reserve in case of fire. The size of that buffer pool was based on the rate of fires which happened in a cooler world, not the rate we experience now.

AB 886 (leginfo.legislature.ca.gov)
submitted 2 weeks ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

If you're like me, you've probably been bombarded with ads about how awful AB 886 is. You should know that AB 886 is an attempt to support local journalism by forcing large, for-profit platforms that share links to online local news articles, like Reddit, Xitter, Facebook, and Google, to pay money to those local news agencies for access to their work. The group behind the ads against AB886 is the CCIA, or the Computer & Communications Industry Association, which is a lobbying group whose membership includes such small, local journalism organizations as:

  • Google
  • Amazon
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • And many more

Here's their Wikipedia page if you're interested: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_%26_Communications_Industry_Association

So, predictably, this is down to huge for profit companies wanting to continue getting access to other people's work for free. If you're feeling like taking memes seriously and getting into fights with strangers, you might think about calling your assembly member and letting them know that the CCIA can go fuck themselves and to support AB886.
