This is a collection of resources on the topic of managing a digital community. Contained are methods for building institutional knowledge, strengthening bonds within the larger social web, and building a space for like-minded people.

NOTE: this wiki is very Lemmy/Fediverse centric but hopes to someday compile more general knowledge.

I Don't See Anything

Remember, federation for small/new communities is finicky and this is a project targeting a small audience. Federation will eventually improve as the project advances.

Very frequently, the best parts of online communities are the result of tacking on unintended functionality to existing software (frequently in unergonomic ways). Chances are, if your community has adapted to jumping through some hoops to participate, folks would be better off removing those hoops altogether and building first class functionality. Take detailed note of where this occurs and consider speaking to your devs about it. Remember, your community is their community.

Have you just created a community (or undergone some major revamp)? Consider posting in one of the following places.

Posts to adjacent communities are also useful. Particularly if your community fills a totally separate purpose. Please do not make posts on competing communities. If you are not sure, it is a good idea to reach out to the other moderation team before posting.

Certain fediverse platforms currently have major compatibility issues. Please check here before attempting outreach across incompatible platforms. If documentation of the issue is sufficiently detailed, it may be a good idea to bring it to the attention of the devs (see Feature Request).

Undocumented Issues

Issues between these platforms are known, but currently undocumented here:

  • Mastodon <-> Lemmy
  • Lemmy <-> Guppe
  • Peertube -> Lemmy

One of the primary goals of this project is to push for the compiling of community knowledge into wikis and similar living documents. To that end, this Lemmy community is meant to serve as an example and playground for experimenting with the concept.

Native Wikis

Native wikis are composed of linked posts in whatever format is supported by the platform. They have significantly fewer features but make up for it in low barrier of entry. In most cases, your community is better off with a native wiki than none at all.

Hosted Wikis

Hosted wikis require a greater set of resources and capacities but can make a big difference if you find yourself in need of greater collaboration capabilities.

Some established wiki software:

Working Examples

Several instances provide wiki services to their users. If you would like your wiki added to this list, please leave a comment below.

One of the goals of this project is to encourage and simplify the process of providing a richer online social experience. With that in mind, methods to build value for the members will be compiled.

Techniques

Slow Drip

Frequently when you go to build a community, you will have a large trove of post material ready to go. Rather than posting all of that at once, schedule posts at regular intervals to avoid overwhelming your users.

State of the Union

Post about the growth of your community and any plans you may have for the future. By involving folks in the process of growth and curation, you both build institutional value in your community and ensure that your community is representative of its members.

Grand (Re)Opening

Post in relevant communities whenever first opening up or making a big change. This can be communities with similar interests to your own or spaces dedicated to community promotion.

Talk to Your Neighbors

Get in touch with communities that are similar in topic. At the very least, you should see about setting up "Related Communities" links.

Establish Credibility

Require or encourage the sharing of accreditations relevant to the topic. This is particularly useful for academic communities (think r/askhistorians).

Book Club

Have your community read through relevant works and discuss their implications. Consider compiling discussion into a wiki for the purpose of further building institutional knowledge.

Feature Request

Very frequently, the best parts of online communities are the result of tacking on unintended functionality to existing software (frequently in unergonomic ways). Chances are, if your community has adapted to jumping through some hoops to participate, folks would be better off removing those hoops altogether and building first class functionality. Take detailed note of where this occurs and consider speaking to your devs about it. Remember, your community is their community.

Institutional Knowledge

Take every opportunity to collect and provide resources to the members of your community. Nearly always, this is where the real value lies. If you're having trouble attracting members, consider improving your value to them by building institutional knowledge.

Living Document

Combine a resources and discussion into a single entity by providing a place for members to work through and compile the things they consider most important.

Group Chat

Provide a space for more direct communication. There are a wide variety of different styles and uses for a group chat. The structure will depend wildly on use case, but you are almost always better off having a more direct way to talk to each other.

Assemble Your Team

Reach out to a small team of people knowledgeable of your topic and see if they are interested in joining the team for your initiative.

One of the goals of this project is to build a culture and set of best practices for directly engaging with your social connections in community building activities. With that in mind, methods to get in touch with and organize with like-minded individuals will be compiled.

Techniques

Hey Buddy

Reach out directly to someone who may be interested in organizing with you.

Activity Drive

Organize an activity sometime in the future and schedule a dedicated period for outreach. Outreach should include enough time to allow for multiple attempts at getting the message out. Particular emphasis should be placed on message originating from multiple original sources.

Distributed Survey

Plan an event wherein community members directly survey their social circle's experiences. This has the benefit of both spreading word about your community and ensuring that your community is connected to a larger conversation.

Community Collaboration

Plan events with related communities. These events should emphasize crossover from the two communities, so as to expose more folks to their own people.

Crossposting

You should nearly always be crossposting to and from related communities. Crossposting is notable among this list for being relatively low impact and therefore repeatable over a shorter period of time.
