Recently lemmy.world admins have changed their policy for signups to their instance due to spam. While this is understandable and I don’t want to get into the details of it here, the policy change does mean that it may make it a little more difficult for new people to sign up and contribute to c/FinalFantasy.

So here’s a few quick pointers for any new people wanting to join in with posts and discussions.

Signing up

I’d still recommend signing up to lemmy.world if you don’t mind waiting for approval, but if you’d rather not do that, there are alternatives.

As Lemmy is built with fediverse in mind, it means you can sign up to any instance of Lemmy and have access to most other instances. Here are a few recommended alternatives where you can sign up:

A full list can be found on the Lemmy website.

Interacting with c/FinalFantasy

You don’t need to be registered to the same instance of a community to interact with it. You should be able to find us through your instances community search feature - Communities in the main navigation (at the top or in the “burger menu”).

Alternatively you can add /c/[email protected] to your instance URL, such as https://sh.itjust.works/c/[email protected], or to make it easier click this link to take you there.

Once you’re here from your instance, subscribe, post and comment to your hearts content.

I’ll update this with any other information as and when required.

Asked if future Final Fantasy games may see a day-one release, Takai says "I think it's possible – probably even likely," before adding, "That said, the team in charge of each project gets to decide its own policy, so this is just my personal opinion."

While Takai's thoughts are his, they align with what Square Enix has said throughout various financial briefings throughout the year. At the company's financial results for the last fiscal year, the developer spoke of a "shift from quantity to quality" as it "aggressively pursues a multiplatform strategy."

Not my footage but thought SteamDeck owners might be interested in seeing this.

Unexpected but looks like some bad frame rate dips here and there with around 20fps in most scenes where there’s a few things going on.

I’m seeing some discussions on the this in various different places and thought it would be interesting to ask the same question here.

Personally I think there’s some great Quality of Life improvements that can be made but having recently finished playing through XIII earlier in the year (albeit on Steam Deck) I don’t think it has aged all too terribly. Visually it still holds its own and improvements for me would largely sit within battle mechanics, such as allowing the team leader to be swapped when there is a KO, or even remaking Paradigm Shift animations.

I’d love to see more to do on Pulse, and maybe more opportunities for lore discovery by way of NPC interactions. But I’d expect the latter to be story breaking given how it unfolds and direction it takes.

What would you improve or change?

Audiobook created by The Lifestream, an unofficial translation of the original in Japanese. It relates the events occurring in the lifestream from Aerith Gainsborough's point of view since her death up to the ending of Final Fantasy VII.

This goes for mobile too (was just browsing mobile FF games and realized they're 20% off). Yay!

If you've never played FFII it has a lot of plot similarity to a New Hope, including an evil emperor, a dark knight working for him, a massive flying weapon that can blow up population centers, heroic sacrifices etc etc.

@finalfantasy hello all. I'm a newcomer who has played final fantasy 1 on steam. But at last I do not use Windows. I use the dark arts of Linux. Do not be afraid I come in peace.

I am patiently waiting for FFVII Rebirth to come to Steam. Any guesses as to when Square will announce a port?

Last year I wrote a post here complaining about the mechanical flatness of FFXVI. Playing FFVII Rebirth I could not help but compare it’s delightful mechanical richness to 16’s flatness, so I decided to write a post celebrating it.

First of all, there is the materia system. It’s such a powerful game mechanic, I can’t help but wonder why so few games have copied the core concept. The magic comes from three parts.

  1. Reifying powers into concrete items.
  2. Giving these items their own development paths.
  3. Making some of the powers meta-powers, changing the way others behave.

These three things together open a combinatorial explosion of character builds that is fun and intuitive to navigate, while feeling much more organic than a sphere grid like system. Decoupling the powers from characters lets you try out a maxed materia with entirely different characters. The meta-powers increase the size of the possibility space multiplicatively.

The materia system also interacts with other mechanics, making all of them richer. In my post about 16 I complained about how boring the weapons were. There were two stats, but they only changed in unison, making all weapons simple upgrades of the previous one. Rebirth takes full advantage of the separate Physical and Magical attack stats, but the materia makes things even more interesting. Do you want many slots, but a weaker weapon? Fewer slots, but more connections? All interesting choices, making most weapons occasionally relevant throughout the game.

And all mechanisms in the combat system benefit from the tweaks materia enables. You get the traditional fun with elements, but materia enriches blocking and character switching systems just as well.

And the combat system in itself has so much to offer. It’s still a bit slow for my taste (in the OG you get to enter ATB commands all the time, in Re* you have to wait for ages; I’m not that entertained by being able to pit pat tinsy bits of damage & dodge while I wait), but it’s definitely not mechanically flat. The way synergy abilities give you more to do while waiting for ATB and synergy skills incentivize switching between characters makes the combat even better than in Remake.

I do have a couple complaints, though. It is annoying how long limit breaks take. Way too many times I started my limit break not even half way to the stagger time of a boss and the stagger ended before the final blow. I even died to Sepiroth once, with a millimeter of his life remaining, because of this.

Also, Sepiroth is way too weak in the Nibelheim flashback. I suppose they wanted to keep the gameplay interesting for the action game nerds, but it fails to deliver the impact of the original. It was brilliant how they showed Sepiroth’s power with game mechanics by making him one-shot everything. In Rebirth, he is hardly stronger than Cloud. (Yes, his numbers are bigger, but with action combat you don’t really have time to see them. He does not feel different.) Sepiroth’s Limit Break, (Limit Break!) did not even finish off the flashback boss.

I also wish the Relationship Level affected the combat. It could eg. make synergy skills with the corresponding character cheaper. But it’s cool that the connection does go the other way.

These are minor nitpicks. As a whole FFVII Rebirth has embarrassingly rich mechanics, well tied to the story. I do hope they give us properly overpowered nonsense in part three, to keep in line with the original. Perhaps gated to be useless until you earn the second star, that was a fun OG idea they didn’t use yet.

This is the megathread for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth release. Any discussion for the game should be in here for the next 4 weeks while we have a post embargo on the game (other games are still ok), after EOD 28th March you will be free to create threads for the game and this one will be unpinned.

Spoilers are permitted in this megathread, so if you do not wish to be caught out by them, I recommend not reading any further.

As always, please be respectful of others.
