Hi All,

Hope everyone had a good October and enjoyed the spooky season!

Just dropping in again to give an overview of what is happening with the server and what we've been working on, along with the usual graphs and stuff 😁

Here's some communities you might be interested in!

  • All Things Tom Scott - A community dedicated to the YouTuber, presenter, and media personality Tom Scott!
  • Data Breaches - Information about data breaches, data leaks, ransomware attacks, and other related stories.
  • Starfield - Discussion of the Bethesda game Starfield
  • Game Deals - A comprehensive overview of all the games on sale (or free!) across the PC world.

New Communities

Since my last post, there have been a couple of new communities you might be interested in checking out:

Server Updates

So we've been working on a few things over the last couple of weeks, including revamping some of the "admin-run" communities (Gaming, Home and Announcements) with new icons (and a banner!).

We've also comprehensively updated our Legal documentation. Previously our Terms of Service was on the Legal tab, but we've found this hasn't been a good way to clearly display information or to add further information to. So we've introduced legal.lemmy.zip with all the legal documentation (i.e. cookie policy, terms of service, code of conduct) and this allows us to easily add more as we need, or update quickly and clearly. Please have a look and let us know what you think!

We've also been working on a public dashboard for server performance so we can continue to be transparent about how the server is run. A preview of what we've got working so far:

We're not quite ready to have this accessed publicly, but hopefully it won't be too long!

ZippyBot has also had some fairly substantial updates, including the ability to broadcast messages to all users, adding news articles to the gaming community, and the biggest of all is that Zippy has replaced the slur filter we used to have in place. Now, rather than remove a word on the slur list regardless of context (which stifled discussion and prevented users here from taking part in discussions on external instances) Zippy will report any comments or posts containing a word on the slur list, and the moderator of the community can make a decision on how to resolve that. This should be a much more hands off and flexible approach to handling this.

Interaction reminder (help support the instance!)

If you’re new to Lemmy.zip - WELCOME! I hope you’re enjoying your time here :)

I wanted to take a moment to encourage everyone to actively engage with our platform. Your participation can take many forms: upvoting content you enjoy, sharing your thoughts through posts and comments, sparking meaningful discussions, or even creating new communities that resonate with your interests.

Your involvement is vital in shaping and nurturing our Lemmy.zip instance. It’s natural to see fluctuations in user activity over time, and we’ve seen this over the wider lemmy-verse for some time now. However, if you’ve found a home here and love this space, now is the perfect opportunity to help us thrive.

Together, we can make Lemmy.zip an even more vibrant and welcoming space for everyone. Thank you for being part of our community!

Donations

As always, we're extremely thankful to people who are kind enough and in a position to donate. You can always see the instance's financial position on OpenCollective, and what we're aiming towards. If you do donate, you'll get your name in the Thank You Thread.

We're currently in a stable financial position, with around 10 months of funding in the pot. This is a great position to be in, but our ask is that if you've been enjoying your time here, please consider a donation. We'd love to be able to save enough to switch to a dedicated server in the future which would improve performance and make the site snappier and more responsive.

Want to help but not in a position to do so financially? Then please remember to interact with the instance! The more users who interact = the better Lemmy.zip becomes!

Server Performance

Time for graphs and some stats!

First is the usual Hetzner CPU usage over the last 30 days:

And second is the Hetzner network stats for the last 30 days:

I'm also including a little sneak peak of the other dashboard we'll soon be sharing with real time performance stats:

Here's our image hosting stats:

And here are some Cloudflare stats. For those that aren't aware, Cloudflare had a bit of a whoopsie the past couple of days, hence why the graphs drop to 0 for a bit! Thankfully Lemmy.zip was fine and continued to work during this.

Overall stats over 30 days:

More detailed overview of traffic through Cloudflare over the last 30 days:

Traffic from regions over the last 30 days:

And finally unique visitor stats over the last 30 days:

Finally, I'd like to thank everyone for being here and helping to build Lemmy.zip into what it is. As always, if you have any questions please put them below or feel free to drop me a message.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/7291022

Some months have passed on since the Reddit blackout this June. It led to an explosive growth in Lemmy users, and lots of urgent work in scaling, bug fixes, user onboarding and more. Since then things have calmed down significantly, giving us breathing room and time to get more long-term work done.

As of Nov. 2023, Lemmy is at ~36k active daily users 🥳 (those who have posted or commented within the last month). While user counts are not an explicit goal of ours, this is still a tremendous achievement, and one which we can all be proud to be a part of. It shows that people truly do want alternatives to US tech companies, and will use them if they exist.

Join-Lemmy Redesign

Most recently we've been working on a redesign of join-lemmy.org to provide a better onboarding experience and cater towards new users. This includes:

  • A helpful new instance picker to reduce choice overload.
  • The instances page is now filterable, based a set of topics and languages, as well as sortable based on activity. The default sort is Random, to encourage people to join smaller servers.
  • The apps page now has sections for Android, iOS, and web apps, as well as libraries. Feel free to do a pull request to add any apps that are missing.
  • The donate page now shows the total amount of monthly donations across all platforms. More details below.
  • The technology used is Typescript with tailwind and daisyUI CSS frameworks.

For server admins: If your instance isn't listed already, you must explicitly add your server topics and languages by doing a pull request to this file.

As you may have noticed, texts on the website are unchanged, and images on the main page are still generic placeholders. We are hoping for your contributions to improve them. For the texts, edit this file. Translations are managed via weblate. Images are located in this folder. If you are good with AI tools, consider replacing main_federation.webp and similar with more colorful images. More main_screen_x.webp images with custom themes or alternative frontends would be nice too. In general feel free to open issues or pull requests for improvements to the site.

Funding Drive

Before the Reddit migration, our income was almost exclusively made up of generous donations from the NLnet foundation. This funding was based on getting paid for implementing new features, specified in advance.

We've known that this funding could not last indefinitely, and that after several years of funding, NLnet's resources are better spent getting other projects up and running. Additionally, much of our time is spent on other equally important work: reviewing changes from community contributors, fixing bugs, doing support, and various organizational tasks.

That is why we are launching our first annual funding drive. The goal is to increase monthly, recurring donations from currently €4.000 to at least €12.000. With this amount @dessalines and @nutomic can each receive a yearly salary of €50.000 which is in line with median developer salaries. It will also allow one additional developer to work fulltime on Lemmy and speed up development.

Recurring donations from Lemmy users are the most sustainable solution for the future. It also means that we need to worry less about funding, and can focus more on improving Lemmy. And instead of being accountable to an external organization, we work directly for Lemmy's users. While one-time donations are also welcome, they are too unpredictable for long-term planning.

You can find available donation options on the donate page. This page was also updated during the redesign to display current donations and funding goals. If each active Lemmy user donated ~€0.33 per month it would be enough for 3 full-time developers. So please consider donating if you use Lemmy every day. Our preferred donation platform is Liberapay because it doesn't have any payment fees or delays, and is itself open source.

Besides Lemmy's developers, please consider donating to those who develop open-source apps or software for the Lemmy ecosystem, as well as server admins and moderation teams who are the backbone of the Lemmyverse. We would be happy to add donation links for the above to join-lemmy.org as well!

If you have any suggestions in regards to the topics mentioned in this post, please let us know. We also want to use this opportunity to thank the countless contributors who are working on Lemmy now.

Hi All,

Welcome to a new(ish) format Monthly update on Lemmy.zip!

We're testing out this format so please let us know if you want to see anything added to this. If you want to see the previous Server Rundowns you can start here :)

Communities you might be interested in

To start, lets look at some of the growing communities on Lemmy. I'll pick a few each month from the most active communities locally to share. If you're not already a part of these, then now you can jump in the action!

  • Interesting News from Around the World - Something that happened recently anywhere in the world. It doesn’t have to have global implications. Just to be informative in some way.

  • Gaming - Lemmy.zip's local gaming community for all things gaming related.

  • World of JRPG's - World of JRPG’s is a community for everything arround JRPG’s. We talk about news, discuss about diffrerent games or share different events.

  • Interesting Shares - A companion to Interesting News from Around the World, but for articles, projects and research.

  • Linux Questions - A community for any and all questions regarding Linux!

  • Free Software - software that follows the free software philosophy, which is free to run, study, modify and distribute.

Smaller Communities

These are relatively new or smaller communities that I've randomly selected that you might be interested in joining and helping to build!

If any of these interest you, please pop over and join in the conversation! Remember, no question or comment is wrong, and everyone loves seeing new content popping up in these communities.

Communities up for grabs

A few communities have been abandoned recently :( so if you've ever wanted to mod a community, with a pre-existing user-base, the below ones are up for grabs. Just PM me or let me know in the comments and I'll set you up as the mod. Currently they're not available to view publicly (except Apple) but I'll add some info on current subscribers. PS - you don't need to be a Lemmy.zip user for this, if you're reading this from elsewhere you're more than welcome to request one of these too.

  • Apple - 128 subscribers
  • Playstation - 418 subscribers
  • Xbox - 131 subscribers
  • Nintendo - 284 subscribers
  • Retro Gaming - 452 subscribers
  • Forza - 63 subscribers

Feedback updates and work being done.

A little while ago we posted about the feedback we had received from the survey, and some of the steps we were looking at taking.

So far, we've updated the intro post to be more relevant to new users, and to be a little clearer on federation, but please have a look and let us know if we've missed anything.

I've updated ZippyBots welcome message to new users to be a bit more expansive and include more information too, but these changes haven't been pushed to Zippy in production yet as I'm working on other things with the bot but these aren't ready (Lemmy's API is lacking in surprising areas sometimes!)

This is also our first attempt at sharing more local communities with the wider instance, and we're still exploring other ways we can do this within the confines of Lemmy and without spamming everyone all the time. Hopefully we'll soon find a good compromise :)

Interaction reminder (help support the instance!)

We're also looking at letting those who donate pick custom emojis for the instance, as a little way of saying thank you. If you're a donator (past or present) then please drop me or Sami a message if you're interested in this, and we'll get that in place for you.

Want to help but not in a position to do so financially? Then please remember to interact with the instance! The more users who interact = the better Lemmy.zip becomes!

Server performance

Time for some graphs - in the future, we'll be looking at sharing a public Grafana dashboard so you can see real time performance for the server, 24x7, but we're not quite there yet. So here are some graphs from the various platforms (previously these were in 7 day periods, now they're in monthly/30 day periods unless otherwise stated):

CPU Usage (over 7 days)

Network usage (over 7 days)

Backblaze (image hosting) usage (total)

Cloudflare overall stats (for past 30 days)

Traffic per region (over 30 days)

Bandwidth (over 30 days)

Unique visitors (over 30 days) outside of federation traffic

Finally, thank you all again for being here. We're always up for improving so if there is anything you'd like to see added to this in the future then let me know.

Thanks

Hi All,

I've finally had some time to break down the feedback we received over the two weeks the survey was up, and I've tried to pull out the key themes and topics of feedback to work on.

As those who answered the questions will know, it wasn't a yes/no type survey and so we can't share the feedback in terms of %s of answers, rather we've lifted the themes we've seen the most.

A big thank you to those who took the time to complete the survey too, the feedback has been incredibly invaluable and lots of people shared kind words about the instance which was really uplifting to read.

So, based on what you said, these are what we'll look to change/implement/improve:

  • Update the intro post (the one in the home community that is also linked in ZippyBot's welcome message) to expand on the functionality of Lemmy, merge it with the other welcome post we put up during the reddit wave, and flesh it out with more information. We appreciate federated social media is a change to how most people are used to exploring social media, so the more we can do to support that transition the better.

  • Expand ZippyBot's welcome message to include a little bit more information around personalising the site (setting a username, changing the theme to your liking via the settings tab, etc) as pointed out this information is not immediately clear or accessible, so may be easier presented in the welcome message.

  • Changing the way we share information with the community, expanding to include more topics and helping to grow the local communities. We're thinking we'll change the server rundowns to 4 weekly, and add more information around the local communities that have been created, the biggest growers etc, to try and support and grow the local communities. We may also look at delivering this information differently, i.e. via a PM instead of pinning posts, but we'll trial this and ask for feedback when we do this.

  • Finally, we won't make any promises right now, but we'll look at adding more themes for users to choose from. If you fancy making one yourself, we'll happily host it.

There was also a lot of feedback regarding expanding and adding more local communities. We hear you, and we agree too, but ultimately the power to create these communities lies in your hands. We will promote and share new communities more as we work on improving our communication methods, and we're looking at building new mod tools (where we can, using the power of ZippyBot) to support moderators of communities, so if you feel there is a community you want to see that doesn't exist, please create it and we'll try to help you build a community there. We'll expand the suggestions ZippyBot gives with new communities too, to help new mods out with the process.

These are the core themes we picked out, but there was lots of one-off or more complex suggestions and improvements that we've taken note of - some are out of our control (user specific instance blocking was suggested a lot which is out of our hands, but the devs have put this into a future version of Lemmy and we'll announce when this is available!) but we will continue to consider these and where possible work these in to future plans.

Again, thank you to those who took the time to complete the survey. We'll probably do this again at the 6 month mark. And please bear with us while we get some of these in place, anything with ZippyBot takes a little bit of time as I do a lot of testing before pushing any changes to it :)

If you have any questions please let me know.

Thanks,

Demigodrick

Hi all, bit late this week but lots of content!

Previous PartsPart 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 / Part 7 / Part 8 / Part 9 / Part 10 / Part 11

TL;DR

  • Feedback closes Friday 22nd
  • Spam updates
  • ZippyBot updates
  • Interaction reminder!
  • Donations are always welcome :)
  • Graphs and stats

Feedback

We've had a great response to our request for feedback, thank you so much. We're going to close the survey on Friday (time undetermined right now) so please, if you haven't yet done so, add your thoughts into the survey soon. Every piece of feedback goes a long way to helping improve this instance.

Spam updates

As many will have seen, and as we as admins have been dealing with, there is currently lots of spam coming from Kbin instances. Unfortunately due to the ActivityPub implementation, moderation actions on Kbin don't federate to Lemmy, and we're needing to deal with quite large waves of constant spam from certain kbin communities. We're not the only ones dealing with this, and we don't want to defederate from Kbin altogether, so we've temporarily put a block on the Kbin.social instances that provide the most spam. These are:

  • Random
  • Gaming
  • Technology
  • Tech
  • PCGaming
  • Science

We will continue to review and remove these when we're able to do so. This is the lightest touch way we can do this, and as per our policy we absolutely dont want to be defederating and stopping their users posting on our instance.

ZippyBot Updates

We identified a gap in our signup process where users weren't recieveing enough information from Lemmy when creating an account, and so were resetting passwords or asking for help when we just hadn't been able to approve the account yet (we need to sleep too!). So ZippyBot now captures accounts that have verified their emails but have not yet been accepted and will send them an email that looks a bit like the following: (you might need to zoom in!)

Hopefully this should help smooth out the signup process.

Interaction reminder

If you're new to Lemmy.zip - WELCOME! I hope you're enjoying your time here :)

This is my regular reminder to people to please interact with the instance. That can be in the form of upvoting content, creating posts or comments and generating discussion, or even creating communities and gather like-minded people to discuss a topic.

Interaction is one of the key measures that helps rank Lemmy instances, and we've been able to punch above our weight in terms of user numbers vs activity. This helps promote the instance and in turn bring new people in. Please do interact, it helps out so, so much!

Donations

As always, we're extremely thankful to people who are kind enough and in a position to donate. You can always see the instance's financial position on OpenCollective, and what we're aiming towards. If you do donate, you'll get your name in the Thank You Thread.

Recently we improved our server's performance which has greatly improved uptime again, but this comes with additional cost. Thankfully we're in a pretty good position due the generosity of our users, but if you want to help secure the future of the instance, please check it out.

Want to help but not in a position to do so financially? Then please remember to interact with the instance! The more users who interact = the better Lemmy.zip becomes!

Now for the graphs!

Here is a pic of our CPU usage over the last week. Unfortunately Hetzner doesnt show enough detail to see the true peaks and troughs of CPU usage, but it gives an idea of the general usage:

And here are some network stats:

(We're looking at better performance management software and seeing if we can share this with you in real time)

These are our backblaze image hosting stats:

And here are our Cloudflare stats:

Including more detail on bandwidth:

And finally location traffic:

Thats all this week - if you want to see anything else in these, please let me know down below.

Thanks

Hi all, been a little while since I've done one of these but the time is right to add some updates!

Previous PartsPart 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 / Part 7 / Part 8 / Part 9 / Part 10

TL;DR

  • Lemmy.zip turns 3 months old
  • We're asking for user feedback on Lemmy.zip
  • Server has had a performance upgrade
  • Donations are always welcome :)
  • Interaction reminder!
  • Graphs and stats

Lemmy.zip turns 3 months old!

September 10th marks Lemmy.zip's 3 month anniversary. I've put a little post together detailing some of the things we've achieved in this time.

User feedback

We've opened up feedback.lemmy.zip for people to share feedback on how they feel Lemmy.zip has done in its first 3 months, and what they'd like to see going forwards. Users can get their access code for the survey by PM'ing ZippyBot with #feedback.

Server performance upgrade

Over the past couple of days we've seen the return of short periods of downtime on Lemmy.zip, most likely due to the server running out of RAM and causing the databases to lock up. We've also added some additional security to the backend of Lemmy.zip which probably pushed the server over the edge, and so we've now upgraded the performance of the server.

Previously we were on Hetzner CPX21 (3 vCPU, 4GB RAM) and now we've upgraded to CPX31 (4 vCPU, 8GB RAM), which should keep us going for now!

Donations

As always, we're extremely thankful to people who are kind enough and in a position to donate. You can always see the instance's financial position on OpenCollective, and what we're aiming towards. If you do donate, you'll get your name in the Thank You Thread.

With increased server performance comes increased cost, and we're currently at about 10 months worth of funding at the new server level. We'd love to one day jump to a proper dedicated server, but we need quite a reserve of funding to feel comfortable doing that, so anything towards that goal really helps.

Want to help but not in a position to do so financially? Then please remember to interact with the instance! The more users who interact = the better Lemmy.zip becomes!

Interaction reminder

If you're new to Lemmy.zip - WELCOME! I hope you're enjoying your time here :)

This is the last 7 days of CPU usage (from just before the server was upgraded)

And this is the network usage:

Thats all for now - please consider completing the survey as it will be incredibly helpful in shaping the instance in the future!

Hello all,

Today (September 10th) marks 3 months since Lemmy.zip was first set up 🥳

Since then we've grown to over 1.5k users, we smashed the canvas event, we've upgraded the server twice, and we have loads of vibrant local communities popping up.

I'd just like to say thank you to everyone who has joined here and helped build this awesome instance.

We'd like to continue to grow this instance in a sustainable and community-driven way, and so we're looking for some feedback on how you think things have gone so far, and what you'd like to see happen in the future. To that end, we've set up feedback.lemmy.zip with some questions for the community, if you have 5 minutes to answer them.

To make sure only Lemmy.zip users can access the survey, you'll need an access code, which you can get by sending a pm to ZippyBot with the text #feedback and ZippyBot will reply with an access code. Apologies this is a bit convoluted, but we only want genuine answers from Lemmy.zip users.

We'll probably leave the survey open a week or two.

Thanks again for being here! Demigodrick

Hi All,

You may have seen the issues occurring on some lemmy.world communities regarding CSAM spamming. Thankfully it appears they have taken the right steps to reducing these attacks, but there are some issues with the way Lemmy caches images from other servers and the potential that CSAM can make its way onto our image server without us being aware.

Therefore we're taking a balanced approach to the situation, and try to take the least impactful way of dealing with these issues.

As you read this we're using AI (with thanks to @db0's fantastic lemmy-safety script) to scan our entire image server and automatically delete any possible CSAM. This does come with caveats, in that there will absolutely be false positives (think memes with children in) but this is preferable to nuking the entire image database or stopping people from uploading images altogether.

But this will at least somewhat guarantee (although maybe not 100%, but better than doing nothing) that CSAM is removed from the server.

We have a pretty good track record locally with account bannings (maybe one or two total) which is great, but if we notice an uptick in spam accounts we'll look to introduce measures to prevent these bots from creating spam if they slip past the registration process - ZippyBot can already take over community creation, which would stop any new account creating communities and only those with a high enough account score would be able to do so, for example.

We don't need (or want) to enable this yet, but just want you all to know we have tools available to help keep this instance safe if we need to use them.

Any questions please let me know.

Thanks all
Demigodrick

Hey all,

Another quiet week in the Lemmy landscape, so just some small topics to cover this week.

Previous PartsPart 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 / Part 7 / Part 8 / Part 9

TL;DR

  • Rules update - No ban evasion allowed here or on other instances
  • Donations - They're always welcome
  • Interaction - Please interact!
  • Stats - graphs!

Rules Update

I've updated the rules in the sidebar to be explicit around ban evasions. If you're banned here and create other accounts to try and evade these bans, we'll extend the ban or take further steps where needed. If you're banned on other instances, and you create accounts here or elsewhere to evade those bans, and its reported to us, we'll ban you here too. We won't allow people to misuse this instance or hurt its reputation in the wider fediverse.

Donations

As always, we're extremely thankful to people who are kind enough to donate. You can always see the instance's financial position on OpenCollective, and what we're aiming towards. If you do donate, you'll get your name in the Thank You Thread.

Its also awesome to see we now have 20 contributors - Thank you all! 😁

Want to help but not in a position to do so financially? Then please remember to interact with the instance!

Interaction

As always, welcome to the new Lemmy.zip users, I hope you're enjoying your time here.

This is my weekly reminder to people to please interact with the instance.

Stats

Cpu usage over the last 7 days:

Network usage:

Backblaze stats:

Cloudflare stats over last 7 days:

And finally, USA firmly back in front this week!

Thats all for this week, but as always please let me know if there are any other stats you'd like to see.

Hello all,

That time of the week again, and wow, what a quiet week! Which is really nice in retrospect because I've been able to chill out and enjoy Lemmy for a bit!

In case you want to see how this instance has developed, have a look at the previous parts.

Previous PartsPart 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 / Part 7 / Part 8

There isn't much to add this week, but I'll add the usual bits and bobs for people to have a look at.

TL;DR

  • Donations - We now accept Crypto!
  • Interaction - No lurking please!
  • Stats - Graphs 'n' stuff

Donations

I've had a few people ask if we can accept crypto donations, and now I can finally say yes, we do accept them. I've added the details in the side bar, but I'll put them here as well:

BTC Addressbc1q0d9exd4ueqwxdpr909k302525hnq3fxs9ga9dq

ETH Address0x07e0102D3Ab219847f0303ca365d295F737D9315

Monero Address42spx9DQH3C9A9YwXcc2ZXWZ6bncq2u4Hi7mwntxkxpQLziar8btobp4Tv9gciPiEE8Q4wGkk6RK67mSh2C8G1vs7XxkPxm

Any crypto donations will be converted to fiat and added to the the OpenCollective website, which we're keeping updated with expenses so we can be as transparent as possible with funding. If you feel you want to donate, please be assured every single bit goes to keeping the server going (and if we are financially secure enough, we'll be upgrading the server for better performance).

Anyone who does donate will get their name in the Thank You Thread. If you use your real name and want me to put your Lemmy.zip username instead, please send me a PM and I'll update it ASAP.

Interaction

Welcome to all new Lemmy.zip users! I think we've had lots of lemmy.world refugees recently, so I hope you're enjoying your time on this instance. If you're new to Lemmy altogether, welcome to the fediverse!

Each week I post a reminder to new and existing users that interaction is what keeps Lemmy growing. An upvote here, a quick comment there... it all goes to keeping Lemmy growing.

If you see content you like, please interact with it!

Stats

Time for pretty pictures!

CPU usage over the last week.

Some network related graphs:

Image storage - Agonizingly close to 100gb of stored images.

Cloudflare Usage over the last 7 days

And finally, visitors from around the world: USA firmly back on top, Finland falling behind Germany!

Thats it for this week. Next week will probably be my last one before Starfield is released and I move into a gaming cave and don't emerge for 3 months :)

Hey all,

That time of the week again, and it is time to see how things have been going over the last week (and a bit)!

In case you've not read them, and want some light Sunday reading:
Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 / Part 7

TL;DR

  • Small Lemmy update to 0.18.4
  • Small uptime wins
  • Change to front-end clients
  • Administration & Defederation policy
  • Funding
  • Interaction
  • Stats

Lemmy updated to 0.18.4

We quietly updated to 0.18.4 following its release. Only minor changes to comments and misc fixes, with no changes to the database, so we were pretty confident about this one not crashing the server! Thankfully we had 0 downtime and the update was applied seamlessly.

Uptime wins

Previously we've been having issues with the server spiking and crashing, the DB locking up and causing the back-end to freeze, and general odd behaviour. Many other instances faced these issues too. I'm glad to say over the last week (and a bit) we've had 100% uptime since the upgrade to 0.18.3 was applied, which has been great. I've also tweaked the nginx settings to prevent old.lemmy.zip from timing out so often due to rate limiting.

Front end Clients

Following the release of Voyager as an app we've moved the front-ends around a little for those not aware.

  • m.lemmy.zip now leads to the Photon front end
  • v.lemmy.zip now leads to Voyager if people still want to use it as a web app
  • old.lemmy.zip still leads to the reddit look-alike.
  • beta.lemmy.zip now doesn't lead anywhere.

This isn't the end of the movements we're making, Photon will likely have a new home (probably p.lemmy.zip or photon.lemmy.zip) and we're always looking for cool new front-ends to implement.

If there are any other front-ends you've seen that you'd like us to host, let me know.

Administration and Defederation Policy

Following this week's recent events, we've implemented an Administration and Defederation Policy to make it clear when and how we as an admin team take action.

Please have a read and let me know if you have any questions.

Funding

Our users continue to be incredibly generous, and we're in a really solid position with funding at the moment. I am continuing to keep the OpenCollective website updated with expenses if you want to have a nosy, and if feel you want to donate be assured every single bit goes to keeping the server going (and if we are secure enough, we'll be upgrading the server for better performance).

Anyone who does donate will get their name in the Thank You Thread. If you use your real name and want me to put your Lemmy.zip username instead, please send me a PM and I'll update it ASAP.

Interaction

Just a quick hello to all new Lemmy.zip users - I hope you're enjoying your time here on Lemmy!

This is my general weekly reminder to new and existing users that interaction is what keeps Lemmy growing. An upvote here, a quick comment there... it all goes to keeping Lemmy growing.

If you see content you like, please interact with it!

Stats

Now for the interesting bit :)

CPU usage over the last 7 days:\

Some network stats:

Backblaze image storage stats:

(Well on our way to 100gb!)

Cloudflare stats over the last 7 days:

And finally, the race between Finland and the USA is back on, with the USA creeping narrowly back into the lead:

This week's post was brought to you by Fred Again's Boiler Room set.

Thats all there is this week, hopefully normal service will resume! As always, let me know if there is anything else you'd like to see.

Demigodrick.
