The Battle of the Isonzo was a series of 12 battles between the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies during World War I, fought along the Isonzo River on the Italian Front between 1915 and 1917. These battles were characterized by brutal trench warfare and resulted in heavy casualties on both sides. The difficult terrain, with its mountainous and rocky landscape, made the fighting particularly challenging. Despite numerous offensives, the Italians were unable to achieve a decisive breakthrough until the later stages of the war, and the battles ultimately contributed to the heavy attrition suffered by both armies.
