A community dedicated to the universe of Warhammer 40k, a tabletop setting in the far, distant future.

This is a general community for 40k miniatures, art, lore discussion, and gameplay discussion.

Rules

  1. Keep it civil.
  2. No memeposts/shitposts. Memes are great but direct them to grimdank.
  3. Please mark any posts containing realistic nudity or realistic excessive gore/violence as NSFW; this rule mainly applies to cosplay and realistic drawings rather than miniatures. Being that 40k is inherently violent, this is a judgement call, and mods may occasionally request posters add tags.
  4. No political or social cause agenda pushing.

Big chunky boi. Has to be the heaviest plastic infantry model I have.

His multi piece cape sucks. You can’t see it in this pic but his right side is all messed up and I had to use miliput to fix it.

The FLGS has a lot of junky terrain, and I did my part by picking out a few pieces to paint. This was an already assembled Imperial Bastion that had some random primer on it. I decided to give it some color with cheap craft paints.

Josh was kind enough to invite me on to discuss my first white dwarf, issue 169 with the cardboard battle bunker. So if you have 20 minutes to waste why not give it a watch.

I don't get into card games on my own, but I was invited to try out Space Hulk Death Angel.

It's a game that tries to translate the experience of Space Hulk into a more portable, and faster playing card game.

The game is entirely co-op, which I very much appreciated. It is frustrating for somebody to pull out a competitive board or card game and expect you to have fun while they stomp you as you are just trying to pick up the rules. The co-op nature of the game makes jumping in much smoother. All players take control of a portion of the space marine terminators sent aboard the hulk, while the genestealers are procedurally controlled.

Marines are limited by various action cards which are specific to each marine pair and the same card can not be played back to back. Using the marines, the goal is to move through four sections of the hulk to reach a random final goal. In my game's case it was to set targeting coordinates and fire some kind of weapon. The more turns I spent fine tuning adjustments, the higher chance of final success, which I thought was interesting.

The combat was brutal and fast, which did feel like regular Space Hulk. Combat could take wild swings. Swarms of genestealers could spawn and bear down on a seemingly doomed marine, but then a chained blast of psychic powers or a flurry of lightning claw special attacks could cut them down. The marines could be making steady progress with the situation under control until an event card scrambles their facings and leaves their carefully planned sector control open to genestealers.

It was fun and quick. If you travel and can't pack up a whole game of Space Hulk it does partially fill the niche.

The Warhammer 40k film and TV series deal between Games Workshop and Amazon may fall apart this year, unless the two teams can “mutually” agree “creative guidelines” by December 2024. That’s according to new information revealed in Games Workshop’s annual financial report, published on Tuesday.

Games Workshop granted “exclusive rights to Amazon in relation to films and television series set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe” in an agreement announced in December 2023. Celebrity champion of Warhammer 40k Henry Cavill is attached to the project, both as an executive producer, and prospective star.

...

According to Games Workshop’s most recent annual report, it and Amazon Content Services LLC are spending the 12 months from December 2023 to December 2024 “working together” to “agree creative guidelines for the films and television series to be developed by Amazon”. The agreement between the firms “will only proceed if the creative guidelines are mutually agreed”.

...

The report states: “Failure to protect our IP may erode our competitive advantage and/or undermine our reputation, which will negatively impact our financial performance”. This refers both to the risk from unlicensed use of GW’s properties, and to licensed use that distorts or diminishes the brand.

The deal with Amazon also gives if the option “to license equivalent rights in the Warhammer Fantasy universe following the release of the initial Warhammer 40,000 production”.

It has been a while since this community has done a painting competition. I'd like to do another one, and get community input.

Right now, I am thinking of making it a single figure contest, no size rules, with submission and judging sometime in late September.

I've previously done trophies and small prizes, but since those are out of pocket costs for me, I've put myself in a corner with excessive shipping costs in the past, so I'm going to make the prize either much smaller or just make a digital record of the winner. I do want to encourage community participation and collaboration, and it is my hope that a painting competition can bring out some excitement that will create that among community members.

I'll leave this post up for a while, looking for interest levels and any suggestion for competition guidelines. More to come after.
