Anime characters serving their country, or otherwise displaying competence for the art of modern warfare.

In boot camp, people definitely carried their rifles by just grabbing them by the receiver/barrel close to center of mass.
Boot camp isn't kitted out with suppressors and NVG's, I'd bet carrying your rifle like that would involve pushups
Maybe. Depends how big the stick up your COs ass is. But unless you swept the gang with the barrel, no one I knew would have batted an eye.
As long you maintained trigger discipline, barrel control, and safety on safe, you could carry your rifle in any way you found comfortable.
