My first inclination is a recluse, but I'm aware of how many people get that wrong what with all the similar looking spiders around here.

Not a recluse. Looks like a Ummidia (trap door spider). Very cool spiders.

Yeah it's legs are too thick and it's too hairy from what I can tell. We have several lookalikes here, such as the wolf spider, grass spider and hobo spider, but their abdomens all pretty distinct, (like the sunflower seed patterns.) The abdomen here threw me off, but the legs being so short and thick point to something else.

A recluse makes me think of a facehugger

Edit: after looking into your suggestion, I do believe it strongly resembles a trapdoor spider. I've never seen one knowing what it was. I was startled by it's size

Yes, the trap-doors are more closely related to tarantulas than the other spiders you mentioned, so they are much bulkier. That one looks to be male to me, so I think you’ve found one out looking for a lady.
