I think I'm one of the few people who didn't like the anime.
The manga was amazing. The character designs, the backgrounds, the touches of humour, the episodic plots, and the fuchikoma were so much better than the anime.

The soundtrack of the manga sucked though ;)
I don't care for the original movie too much, but Stand Alone Complex is one of my favorite pieces of media by far.
