My device, Xiaomi 11 Lite NE 5G, is currently running on Android 14 (PixelOS). There's unlimited Google Photos backup. I have turned on device folder backups. While Google Photos app provides an option to delete all the photos in default camera folder which have been uploaded, there's no such option for device folders like WhatsApp images, WhatsApp videos, etc. I have to go to each photo within Google photos' WhatsApp folder and check if it's uploaded or not and then delete them. Is there any easier way?

Hi, I just upgraded my Xiaomi 11 Lite NE 5G to Android 14 via PixelOS (a custom ROM). Best things I like about it is that it's way smoother and faster than Android 13 (PixelOS). I got to experience Pixel specific features as well. I liked AI wallpaper but it takes some time to generate even with 100 Mbps connection. Other than that, it's going great for me. How has been your experience so far?

I really like the simple, stock - ish layout on my home screen, which rules out a few popular suggestions like Niagara.

  • I liked Lawnchair, but development is dead. Even the new alpha hasn't been updated in a year or more, and is missing features.
  • Neo Launcher perhaps came close to being the most ideal, but it is buggy as hell and also hasn't been updated in a year
  • Nova is what I'm using now, but I hate that it does not remember the drawer groups for each app once they're reinstalled. I work as an app tester and having to sort work apps manually every time drives me up the wall

Does anyone here have any suggestions?

I know Google changed it to 3 columns in landscape a few months ago, and it's better this way. But did they also change it from 2 to 1 in portrait? And I just didn't notice until recently. It's so stupid looking this way. Any way to change the column number?

For example, I want to have one QR code that I can scan (or NFC tag) and then it turns of network access for specific apps on my phone where people could try to reach me

(I want to be in control of my mental and emotional access/peace)

  • It's got to be Free&OpenSourceSoftware tho

Thanks :)

I had a Huawei phone which had a fingerprint reader at the bottom and a friend of mine had a phone with a fingerprint reader at the side of the phone.

Whenever we grabbed our phones out of the pocket, our finger was placed onto the reader and the phone got unlocked. The lock screen was almost gone. It was only useful to have a look at the clock. You didn't need a lock screen.

We were able to have 16 shortcut widgets, now it's down to 4 on a pixel and it's crap.

I really don't like the file picker now - when sharing images or anything else, it shows inconsistent and incomplete lists of folders, and although I can then choose to go to Browse and pick that way, I'd rather just have that by default. Anyone know if it's possible?

57 system apps still enabled.
110 system apps removed.

There's literally no loss of functionality in the phone or any of my apps, no errors, no missing features, after removing 2/3 of everything that was on it.
Feels kind of nice, actually. I just wish I could degoogle this thing, though...

same thing with lemmy clients, manually clicking through 100 check boxes of supported domains... can't the app ask to do it on first launch? or is my setup to blame?

I played Dragons Quest Tactics on and off for about a year but I never thought it was very good at all and there were a lot of annoying aspects I hated, recently the game decided to delete all my progress and characters so I'm done with it for good. Is there anything actually fun to play on Android in the same vein?

I'm using NewPipe but some functionalities are lacking. Looked at revanced but unsure about it's reputation. Also, will I get banned by using a modded YT client? Thanks.

Feel free to use, kustomize and share! You will need the KWGT App Download: https://quickshare.samsungcloud.com/zW3dqQcSTBgx

Wish there was an **Android Studio Lite** version of the IDE that is targeted to low powered devices and has only bare minimum features to develop an app.

How does sleep really work in the Android kernel?

I've been wondering about this for a while, but couldn't find anything about it. What exactly happens after the screen turns off? Does the kernel actually suspend and halt the CPU? If so, how are notifications received while sleeping? Is there a coprocessor involved?

I'm curious. It would be great if someone could point me towards some articles or videos about this.

Hi, I'm wanting to set up app locking on my Pixel 4a with only a physical device to unlock them. Preferably something keychain-able.

Here are some options I've looked into and considering:

  • Bluetooth device with...
    • separate Android profile + Smart Lock
    • AppLock - Fingerprint app
      • this is the only app of this type I found that supports Bluetooth
  • NFC tag with...
    • some app locker app, though I haven't been able to find one that supports NFC
    • Tasker (related how-to)

Here are some options I've looked into and not considering:

  • USB-C security key
    • would prefer a wireless option to not wear out the phone's port
  • Unpluq
    • I don't like subscriptions
  • Smart Lock doesn't support NFC anymore (request to bring it back)

Notes:

  • I actually have an old Google Bluetooth Titan Security Key, but it doesn't seem to work with Smart Lock. It doesn't let me add it as a trusted device despite being successfully paired. I think it might operate on Bluetooth Low Energy.
  • Seems like NFC might be better than Bluetooth for my purposes since I wouldn't have to worry about battery life.
  • I don't know what Bluetooth device might work best for this purpose. I believe products like Tile also work on Bluetooth Low Energy.
  • Any recommendations on NFC tags? Seems like Etsy might be good to get something somewhat customizable and better looking than the blank chips I've seen listed online.

Happy to hear anything you have to share on this topic!

The problem with most smartphone image editors is that they are meant for quick edits to photos. Usually they are limited to cropping, adding filters and drawing. I'm looking for something a little more capable, something more akin to a traditional desktop editor like GIMP. Open source is a plus.

Two years ago, a feature was added to Android 12 where the previous audio source would fade out when a different source starts playing (e.g. you start a YouTube video while music is playing).

A post was made on XDA on 18 May, 2021:

Audio focus is determined by the app in question that's playing media. Google explained that when an app requests audio focus while another app has the focus and is playing, the framework forces the playing app to fade out. This will be a nice change because instead of another app abruptly ending its audio stream whenever the user starts another session, Android 12 will nicely fade out the old stream that's lost focus.

I remember being very impressed with this feature and found it satisfying every time. However, after buying a Samsung Galaxy A24 running Android 13, I was disappointed to discover that this feature is missing.

This is yet another reason why I can't wait to install a custom ROM on this phone. For now, though, I guess I'll just have to wait.
