Did some progressive faction take over NY dems and naïvely try to ungerrymander the state, or is the conservative establishment hurting themselves to stop progressives from taking over?
Nah, I was trying to compare the somewhat well meaning people (the voters, that is, not the politicians) that think they can change in to being unironic fans of a jobber basketball team. Kinda clumsy phrasing on my part lol
Conservative establishment
Emphasis mine.
Charitably, New York Democrats were probably afraid that if Republicans sued successfully, a court could redraw the map with no solicitude for Democratic incumbents. They were trying to protect themselves, with little concern for national Democrats. But if Republicans had sued to thwart a gerrymander and won, the cost would have been minimal: The Legislature would merely have to try again.
Instead, it didn’t even try, choosing instead to shore up its individual fates at the expense of the party broadly.
civil politics in action
Civil religion politics no less.
If I was a talent scout for the NFL I would take them to any DNC rally when they're looking for Quarterbacks. Because they can throw.
Never underestimate Dems’ ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
We're the adults in the room, we have to make it so everybody gets exactly half the seats so it's fair.
Wait New York isn't a democrat stronghold? Wild.
Rural are full of chuds like everywhere else, and lots of rich people in suburbs
they claimed that the maps were to blame, a storyline that conveniently distracted from the thoroughgoing institutional decay of the state Democratic party, which lacks basic organizing and turnout infrastructure.
This right here is why parties lose. It's what happened in Florida. It's happening in New York.
I'm sure the Democrats made maps that are less gerrymandered, but the math on 2022 votes per precinct still works out to a similar 2022 outcome. Because the NY Dems are apparently not running their party very well.
Democrats need to focus on building a party apparatus as formidable as the Republican Party was before Trump. If they don't do that, they will continue to lose.
They want to lose. They get more money when fundraising and they don't have to deal with the messy business of being in power and making decisions that piss off constituents
