If it is not possible, I strongly suggest making it possible. Top in my experience has been more useful than hot and it's annoying to have to click on it for every post

Some alternative frontends and apps have it that way, but the default Lemmy UI doesn't I believe.

This should be the relevant issue:

Hello,

Good to see you! FYI, we created [email protected] yesterday to discuss how to grow communities on the Fediverse, I thought you might be interested.

See you around!

How do you access lemmy? I use connect for lemmy on iPad and android. It has an option for default sort type for comments and posts. Unfortunately, scaled is not yet an option, since it was introduced in lemmy, but hot and top are options.

Boost can do this

Also I did suggest a tweak to the hot rank for comments, I do feel like Hot is ok for posts but not for comments

I wish this were added to the official web UI too. I know they probably have reasons against it but just let us choose for ourselves. They can leave Hot the default but I do think the votes matter and the highest voted comments are usually worth reading.

You can't in Jerboa either I don't think and it sucks

If you use Eternity, you can easily make comments sort by Top as default.
