A friend of the family who i discuss politics with asked me to read Jordan Peterson's 13 rules for life, i asked him, in return, to watch/listen to some of Parenti's lectures. He accepted.

I really didn't think this through did i.. I have to read Jordan Peterson now๐Ÿ˜ญ

Well this is your time to read it and give meaningful critique to your friend. I know he will be having a harder time finding critique on a Parenti lecture.

There's a positive side to everything after all

Im way to jaded, because my first thought was, "no he won't". Hopefully he actually engages with the material though.

jp book is just a run of the mill self-help book, you could probably get away with reading a summary of it lol

But then all the rage against women, children, stoners, toddlers, communists and so on gets missed!

Cass Eris (cognitive psychologist, succdem/liberal) has a playlist going through the book. She brushes part of outright accepts some anti-communist horseshit, but those should be obvious to you when she does. Other than that, she shows that holding JPB to any reasonable academic standard is a futile endeavour, from sharing information from his patients doing little to protect their identity to making absurd propositions and comparisons all with little to no citations. She also makes it a point to point out all the Freudian and Jungian poppycock Beterson has incorporated into his work.

It's a lot of videos averaging 40 mins so you could limit yourself to 1-3 rules and probably still be far more in-depth than your friend. I don't suggest trying to go through the whole thing quickly, Dr. B's work is quite frequently a mindfuck to think about with any depth, far too much quackery to take at face value.

Yo thx didn't expect a genuine response โ™ฅ๏ธ

It's self help for tories, it's not really that deep.

Some of it is generic enough self help you can't really argue with, other stuff will leap out at you for being only slightly hidden conservatism in a supposedly apolitical self-help book.

Pirate it on libgen, or z-library or something.

What's good isn't new, and what's new isn't good. Sticking to that can be a helpful way to criticize the bad stuff without getting bogged down in "well no shit cleaning your room occasionally is nice."

First world problems

[โ€“] [email protected] 17 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

The self help book - like many others - has no meaningful concept of externalities so fails to give the toolkit to find the solution to complex problems one may have, and has no real understanding of social cooperation to solve challenging problems. It is essentially relying on the luck of privilege; that your problems are sufficiently devoid of most people's realities that neither tackling externalities nor real social cooperation or organisation is required to solve them.

It sucks ass but JP's particular derangement is honestly pretty entertaining, moreso with the way his character has developed since his Journey Into the Dark (his brain damage from the medical coma). Get one of those ai tools to read in his deflating balloon voice and it should be bearable in chunks

Jordan Peterson books shouldn't be put down.

They should be thrown with great force.

lol fam that book slaps, its a great fire starter, I keep a copy tied to my little red book in my survival bag. The red book is for reading next to the fire I started with 13 rules.

Iโ€™d just listen to the audiobook heavily sped up.

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

i mean, this is your chance to show him truly facts and logic and steer him away from rightoid bs

audiobook, adjust the playback speed. you can probably find a torrent so you don't have to pay him

They are out of the times with the rest of the alt-right, who have since moved on from JP, but JP was used by the alt-right as a gate way to "red pill" people. (LMAO)

Maybe if you feign agreeance with some of JP's idea,s you will find out what alt-right ideology they are attempting to convert you to.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

How are they going to verify that you read it? Can't you read a summary on Wikipedia?

Besides, JP is a benzo addict and his daughter rebelled against him by dating a communist. Not the sort of person one should make a role model.
