It's kind of misleading as they are not new accounts, but just existing Instagram users.

Users aren’t just signing up: they’re posting, too. As of Thursday, my colleague Alex Heath reported that there have already been more than 95 million posts and 190 million likes shared on the app.

Even looking past the number of signups, that’s a lot of engagement in less than a week.

Also how many accounts are bots? Probably a large amount.

That are now Threads users.

Lucky to be not one of them.

This headline means jack shit after hearing that they just migrated over people's existing Instagram and Facebook accounts. This makes it seem like it's tendy when the company behind it simply moved people over to the platform without their consent and in some cases without their knowledge.

I know Threads hate is hot right now, but are you really need to spread fake information just because you hate Threads?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

If that were true wouldn’t they have a billion users already?

It doesn’t work that way. If you open the Threads app, it’s not full of ghost profiles of your Instagram follows who were automatically migrated over without their knowledge.

You still need to create a profile and verify your handle. You can see which of your friends are currently on the app… but you can also see who has not migrated over yet.

So Threads has been regularly posting how many Threads profiles are being created — 1M, 10M, 50M, etc — more or less in real time. If you go on the app you can see the migration happening as more and more people (and brands 🙄) make the transition.

I believe the numbers. If they were counting the migrated people as “users” then it would be much higher, and it wouldn’t be so low compared to total FB/Insta profiles.

Isn't it users that voluntarily tried to use the app? Instagram still has far more downloads. Almost everyone I follow on Instagram seems to have also given it a try at least once. I tried it and realised platforms of that style aren't for me anyway (never cared for twitter either).
