Since I had to throw away my trusty Floid The Genuine , I live in dissatisfaction: I don't have anymore an aftershave that fits basically any soap, smells good and plays nice with my skin.

Do you have any recommendations for one-size-fits-it-all aftershaves?

Thayer’s Witch hazel was always my go-to.

I always spritz some witch hazel and then once it dries, rub in aloe gel (like for sunburns)

I use aftershave that doubles as moisturizer. Regular aftershave hurts my face, while what I use helps seal any cuts. I can't recall the brand atm tho.

Sharp Dressed Man is a good general purpose aftershave.

MΓΌhle Rasurlotion and Speick. They're alcohol + witch hazel with a light fresh scent. The witch hazel makes me optimistic about the "plays nice with my skin" part.

Pitralon.

Pitralon.

I would hahe been disappointed if you hadn't recommended it.

I think I had seen Speick in German supermarkets, so I guess I should be able to get this

Shit, I just read @[email protected]'s skin care advice on your other question (thanks Dave, btw!). I had forgotten about your menthol sensitivity. Speick has menthol.

thanks Dave, btw!

No problem! πŸ‘πŸ»
ADHD hyperfocus can be quite useful sometimes and this is one of my current favourite topics. If I can help a fellow wetshaver with my acquired knowledge, even better! I now plan to write a little skincare essay for our instance which I hope to finish around the end of this month, as I want to consult with some experts too.

Indeed 😊

Looking forward to reading it!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

I hope that I can keep my promise of finishing it in time. Will do my best ✌🏻

I'm wΓ΄ndering though if this is sensitive to dosage: I have used Proraso Green preshave for years without issue, and AFIK AYLM's Marduk also contains menthol, but I did get strange skin feelings with both Don JosΓ© ast Meissner Tremonia soaps with menthol.

Well, speick splash is a small enough investment to just give it a tryπŸ‘

If you have Lidl near you, their branded aftershaves are very affordable, have great ingredients, and there are a couple of scents to choose from last time I checked (which is admittedly 2+ years ago).

In the USA they're sold as allMan, and in Europe they're Cien Men.

The scents are:

Fearless (Aqua in Europe) - A fresh type of scent. I'm not sure what it's a dupe of, but it smells good. I'm not sure if it's my favorite of the two, but it smells stronger than the other option which is:

Defiance (X-Bolt in Europe) - A mellow sort of scent said to be a dupe of Boss Bottled.

I think both scents are good, and I've used both at work, although I think Defiance/X-Bolt is more suitable since it doesn't cut through as much.

I can go to a Lidl, but they are not the closest.

Probably not worth it, then. In the US they don't sell anything online, I'm not sure about your neck of the woods. You can get it on eBay probably, but the price will be quite a bit higher I imagine.

Edit: I just checked USA eBay and there's none to be found. I wonder if they even still sell it!

Supply.co has been fucking amazing. My GF got me it for Christmas last year and I just ran out of the shave balm. It's so great!

For something more store bought, bevel shave gel and bevel aftershave lotion balm from target is also excellent.

I’ve always liked TOBS, personally. Soaps and aftershaves. The sandlewood aftershave is great in the winter but is extremely overpowering during the summer. During the summer I prefer Jermyn Street, Eaton College or St. James.

Granted, the only soap I use that has a strong scent of it’s own is Arko.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

ToBS is a bit iffy for sensitive skin though (background).

First time I've heard that. Interesting read, thank you. Though, for my own part, I like the smell of their products and they haven't caused any issues with my skin so I'll continue using them. Each cat their own rat.

Each cat their own rat.

Never heard that. I like it πŸ™‚

Got it from Heinlein’s Citizen of the Galaxy, when I was young. Good book.

I don't have a recommendation; I just want to lament Dapper Dragon Soaps going out of business. I don't know the story, but probably he just lost interest or wasn't making enough money. He made some really fantastic and unusual aftershave lotions, and I miss them so much.

Apparently he still does some releases, announced on Facebook and X, but I don't love the product enough to join either of those platforms to get updates.

The Goodfellas Smile has alcohol-free aftershave fluids in their scents, beware of added menthol in some scents though. HAGS has some pretty nice variations of their scents as witch hazel toners. Speaking of it, both TGS as well as Thayer's offer a Witch Hazel + Cucumber toner (the cucumber extract is said to help moisturise your skin).

Apart from those already mentioned:

I also really support the idea of Stirling Soap Co. ASBs that someone already mentioned; these are great for dried out skin πŸ‘πŸ»

I have a HAGS soap, and it is great. I'm not sure though that I would consider the scent of Megalodon something that goes with anything.

The trouble with ES is that they seem to be distributed nearly only by themselves...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Hmm, perhaps Barberwood would be a good HAGS choice then? I find barbershop scents pretty much go with anything. The emulsion balms by WestMan might be the best choice for you then, however I only have MazaGran and that's somehow a sweet & spicy coffee note - not sure how well it'd go with citrus/fresh shaving soap...

Unfortunate. I got a lot of their (E&S) stuff at AboutBodyCare, but I'm not certain that they ship to France at an acceptable price.

I may have a way better recommendation then: OAM Oli del benessere toner - it's an alcohol denat. free aftershave toner with OAMs "wellness oils" scent. It pretty much goes well with most other scents, doesn't break the bank, Rasoi Goodfellas even mentions that the scent of the toner is "less persistent than the alcohol version" so it doesn't linger around too long to interfere with any perfume you might want to use.
