I'm just using Matrix for Lemmy.zip for a few days. It reminds a bit of discord with it different rooms. But it's not that active, a hand full of messages every few days.
I wonder why Matrix is being so well received by the community over XMPP which has been around for years and is also federated.
Bridges is a big advantage it offers. So if you already have a community it allows you to move people over slowly while not loosing those that are completely against trying out a new platform.
And Google dropping support for it in 2013 really hurt XMPP.
I didn't know that feature. So, if I understood it well, if you have a Slack community you could move your people to Matrix with no pain. Sounds really good.
Anyway, I just cannot understand why the fact that Google dropped support for XMPP could hurt it that much. I'm not possitioning myself, I just cannot understand. That's all.
Same reason iMessage dominates iPhones. Proprietary lock in as a vendor makes transitioning regular people very hard. After years of everyone on Android/Gmail being able to talk with people that used XMPP were suddenly cut off.
