I've always pronounced the word "Southern" to rhyme with howthurn. I know most people say it like "suthurn" instead. I didn't realize that the way I pronounce it is considered weird until recently!

I created this account two days ago, but one of my posts ended up in the (metaphorical) hands of an AI powered search engine that has scraping capabilities. What do you guys think about this? How do you feel about your posts/content getting scraped off of the web and potentially being used by AI models and/or AI powered tools? Curious to hear your experiences and thoughts on this.

Edit¹: This is Perplexity. Perplexity AI employs data scraping techniques to gather information from various online sources, which it then utilizes to feed its large language models (LLMs) for generating responses to user queries. The scraping process involves automated crawlers that index and extract content from websites, including articles, summaries, and other relevant data. It is an advanced conversational search engine that enhances the research experience by providing concise, sourced answers to user queries. It operates by leveraging AI language models, such as GPT-4, to analyze information from various sources on the web.

Edit²: One could argue that data scraping by services like Perplexity may raise privacy concerns because it collects and processes vast amounts of online information without explicit user consent, potentially including personal data, comments, or content that individuals may have posted without expecting it to be aggregated and/or analyzed by AI systems. One could also argue that this indiscriminate collection raise questions about data ownership, proper attribution, and the right to control how one's digital footprint is used in training AI models.

Hello, I recently bought an acoustic guitar, and this is my second attempt at learning to play.

I made some progress, teaching myself basic chords and strumming, but I'm having trouble following sheet music/chord patterns and similar resources. Sometimes, when I'm watching a YouTube video on how to play a song, they don't provide the strumming pattern or other details.

I've only been playing for a month, and I really enjoy it, but I feel like I'm starting to slow down again. I did download a book on how to improve my playing, which I plan to read later today.

I was wondering if anyone had a few resources they'd be willing to share.

Thank you!

Rules: explain why

Ready player one.

That has to be one of the cringiest movies I've seen, is tries so hard, too hard with it's "WE LOVE YOU NERD, YOU'RE SO COOL FOR PLAYING GAMES AND GETTING THIS 80S REFERENCE" message and the whole "corporation bad, the people good" narrative seems written for toddlers... The fan service feels cheap and adds nothing to the story.

Finally, they trying to make the people believe that very attractive girl with a barely visible red tint spot on her face is "ugly"... Like wtf?

Yet it received decent reviews plus being one of the most successful movies of that year.

I've been coding for years in a multitude of languages, but other than one c class I had in college I mostly learned through osmosis, or learned new things as they were needed.

So my knowledge is honestly all over the place and with a ton of gaps.

I'm trying to learn rust and starting going through The Rust Book and afterwards I plan on going on Rust by Example and trying to code my stuff as strictly following best practices as possible.

Is that a waste of time? I mean rawdogging it has been working for me for a decade now. Should I just yolo and write what I wanna write in Rust and learn as I go?

I keep hearing I should get a flu shot to help prevent bird flu — but I thought flu shots only prevented illness from the particular strains the shot was designed for. Does getting a traditional flu shot do anything to prevent bird flu transmission?

I watched Bedknobs and Broomsticks over Christmas and now I have Bobbing Along stuck in my head.

Let's share our current ones to remove their power.

A coworker asks what you're bringing to the potluck. What's the worst response?

I've been using Lemmy since the Reddit exodus. I haven't looked back since, but I miss a lot of mental health communities that I haven't been able to find replacements for here on Lemmy. Does anyone know any cool mental health communities that are somewhat active?

Did you try to erase all existence of your past? Or do you own it as if it were just another chapter of your life? Or something else entirely?

Not just as in Lemmy, but as in general.

Since the election I've kinda buried my head in the sand to try and stay sane, so I'm not sure what projections are looking like for the real estate market. Unfortunately I need to move pretty ASAP and I'm having the worst luck with rentals.

So, anyone have any advice or an idea of the outlook in the next few months?

I'd like to see just how horrible someone can make a site. Facebook is a good contender.

aka: Burglary of your home, Car break-in, Your bedroom getting searched by someone (Parents/Roomates/Housemates/ or even Burglars), Your Backpack, Personal Electronics/Phone/Computer/etc getting searched, etc. (Including any seaches by law enforcrment / security)

Basically, anything that can be considered "personal space".

Why I ask?

Well... My parent's car has signs of being searched through last night, I think they forgot to close the windows all the way, and some random thief got in and looking for valuables, nothing of value wa taken, but stuff were all over the car, now I hate the idea of getting into that car again (someone might've slept inside the car, blegh 😖). That car feels so "tainted" now.

Like this cant be only my feeling right? Like, you just feel disgusted after someone touch your things against your will (especially if they are strangers).

I was thinking about this the other day.

I can't see the point, desktop search is a solved problem.

Yes Windows find is shit, but it doesn't have to be.

I know a bunch of the conspiracies, but what is the legitimate use case?

Hey all, probably better places to ask this but you all know everything. I got a oneplus 10 pro, and it has a very faint microphone icon in the top right. It's not there all the time, but I've noticed it with firefox, and a few other apps.

I messed around with the mic permissions but nothing seemed to get rid of it.

What is it, and how do I make it not there?

I give them a wash when I first buy them, then never again unless they actually get something on them, which is very infrequent.

This question doesn't apply to jeans you're wearing to work in, and expect to get dirty.

I, personally, like to take the opportunity to express aspirations: not just trying to stop doing things I feel are harmful, but also to try new things or practice positive things more. A couple from me:

  • Avoid sarcasm when dealing with people, especially strangers, it does not go over well when they don't get the joke
  • Do something positive, helpful, and non-criminal to counter the right wing political trend. (granted, this one needs more detail)

How about you?
