Since at least the fall of 2023, Russian drones have ravaged Beryslav, a small city near Kherson in southern Ukraine, right by the Dnipro River. [...] Between last September and July 2024, they [Ukrainian authorities] counted over a hundred strikes that left nearly 130 reported civilians injured and 16 dead in Beryslav and its surrounding villages and settlements.

In-depth open-source investigation [and] interviews with Ukrainian officials, war analysts, drone experts, NGOs on the ground, and survivors of drone attacks. They all point to one thing: Russian military may have used drones indiscriminately and systematically against civilians.

[...]

Such drones are "highly precise weapons,” says Wayne Jordash, adding that the "room for accident and incidental damage” is limited. British lawyer Jordash, who carries the honorary title of King's Counsel, is president of the Global Rights Compliance, a non-profit legal practice specialized in international humanitarian law. He has been advising prosecutors in Ukraine since early on in this war.

Real-life 'computer game'

According to witnesses, drones circle over [the city of] Beryslav from sunrise to sunset. Lyubov Kindrat, who relocated to a safer area in Ukraine with her husband after the attack, says it felt like Russian troops were playing a computer game, with "living targets."

According to experts, FPV drones can fly up to 15 km (roughly 10 miles) before running out of battery or losing signal ...

A new, fourth fire broke out at the oil depot in Proletarsk on Sunday: the fire spread to tanks in the western part of the depot

This is indicated by a satellite image taken at 14:41 local time on Sunday. The fire reached the fourth row of tanks from the left. According to one version of Russian Telegram channels, explosive kerosene may be stored in this part of the oil depot.

The Kavkaz oil depot of Rosrezerv near the city of Proletarsk in the Rostov region was attacked by Ukrainian drones on August 18. Another strike, according to unconfirmed reports, was carried out after the fire had already started, on August 23. Dozens of firefighters were injured while trying to put out the fire. Smoke from the fire stretches into the sky for more than 60 kilometers, but the authorities of the Rostov region say that there is no threat to human health or deterioration in air quality.

Fire at Rosrezerv oil depot in Proletarsk on satellite image: day nine

Satellite images of the fire at the Rosrezerv oil depot in the Rostov region taken on Monday, August 26, show that the flames have died down a little, and the fires have been localized. Judging by the fact that the two fires are located at a fairly large distance from each other, another drone strike on the oil depot on August 23 may indeed have been carried out, as Russian sources wrote.

New satellite image of the aftermath of the Ukrainian strike on the Russian military base near Ostrogozhsk in the Voronezh region

Radio Liberty has published a fresh satellite image showing the aftermath of a Ukrainian strike on Saturday on a Russian military base in a forest 6 kilometers from the town of Ostrogozhsk in the Voronezh region. Smoke from the munitions explosions has cleared, revealing structures dug in the forest by the military. Earlier on Sunday, Voronezh Region Governor Alexander Gusev said that the munitions had stopped detonating and that residents of two of the four villages that were evacuated were allowed to return home (a total of 600 people fled their homes due to the explosions). Another two villages will be examined for unexploded ordnance.

There were no reports of casualties as a result of the strike, but on Saturday Radio Liberty was able to find photographs on social media taken by Russian troops in the forest, which showed that personnel were constantly present at the base.

Hungary's foreign minister said on Saturday the European Commission's decision not to mediate in a dispute over a blockage of oil supplies from Russia via Ukraine into his country suggested that Brussels was behind the stoppage.

Hungary and its neighbour Slovakia have been protesting since Ukraine put Russian oil producer Lukoil (LKOH.MM) on a sanctions list in June, stopping that company's oil from passing through Ukrainian territory to Slovak and Hungarian refineries.

The assertion from Hungary's Peter Szijjarto, which he made without providing evidence, came a day after the European Commission declined a request from Hungary and Slovakia for it to mediate between them and Ukraine over the sanctions.

The faded eyes of their [i.e. R.F.] chief perceive the whole world as a gray zone. But we will not allow to turn into a gray zone our lands, where the blue and yellow flag rightly belongs.

A sick old man from the Red Square, who constantly threatens everyone with the red button, will not dictate any of his red lines to us. Only Ukraine and Ukrainians will determine how to live, what path to take, and what choice to make. Because this is how independence works.

Senior figures in Kyiv have suggested that using the Anglo-French weapons in a “demonstration attack” will show the Kremlin that military sites near the capital itself could be vulnerable to direct strikes.

The thinking, according to a senior government official, is that Russia will consider negotiating only if it believes Ukraine had the ability “to threaten Moscow and St Petersburg”. This is a high-risk strategy, however, and does not so far have the support of the US.
