Happy late thread day! Yesterday I participated in a relay triathlon and was way too pooped to do the thread, sorry!

Anyway I finished another game! This time chants of senaar. This game is sooooo good. One of my faves all time id say. Scratches the obra dinn outer wilds itch. Highly recommend. Also started some DRG survivor and gnorp apologue. Both are pretty fun!

The format of these posts is simple: let's discuss a specific game or series!

Let's discuss the Age of Empires series. What is your favorite game in the series? What aspects do you like about it? What doesn't work for you? Are there other games that gave you similar feelings? Feel free to share any thoughts that come up, or react to other peoples comments. Let's get the conversation going!

If you have any recommendations for games or series for the next post(s), please feel free to DM me or add it in a comment here (no guarantees of course).

from the SAG-AFTRA press release:

Any game looking to employ SAG-AFTRA talent to perform covered work must sign on to the new Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement, the Interim Interactive Media Agreement or the Interim Interactive Localization Agreement. These agreements offer critical A.I. protections for members.

Negotiations began in October 2022 and on Sept. 24, 2023, SAG-AFTRA members approved a video game strike authorization with a 98.32% yes vote. Although agreements have been reached on many issues important to SAG-AFTRA members, the employers refuse to plainly affirm, in clear and enforceable language, that they will protect all performers covered by this contract in their A.I. language.

“We’re not going to consent to a contract that allows companies to abuse A.I. to the detriment of our members. Enough is enough. When these companies get serious about offering an agreement our members can live — and work — with, we will be here, ready to negotiate,” stated SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher.

“The video game industry generates billions of dollars in profit annually. The driving force behind that success is the creative people who design and create those games. That includes the SAG-AFTRA members who bring memorable and beloved game characters to life, and they deserve and demand the same fundamental protections as performers in film, television, streaming, and music: fair compensation and the right of informed consent for the A.I. use of their faces, voices, and bodies. Frankly, it’s stunning that these video game studios haven’t learned anything from the lessons of last year - that our members can and will stand up and demand fair and equitable treatment with respect to A.I., and the public supports us in that,” said Crabtree-Ireland.

Lately I've been thinking about Voxatron, an incomplete yet fun little top-down-ish shooter game from 2011. I love the way it looks and plays, so I've been wondering if there are any other games with the same aesthetic?

It's a bit hard to explain, but what I liked specifically about Voxatron was how the characters and the environment were animated. Everything seemed to snap to an invisible three-dimensional grid, or in other words, voxels didn't rotate. Here's an example.

What I'm not looking for is a game that is made of voxels, but is animated like polygons, if that makes sense. Like this. I'm not really sure what term to use, because searching for "voxel games" was not very fruitful for me. Search results encompassed everything from Minecraft to Severed Steel.

I imagine animating a game in such a way would be super time consuming, but I still have to ask: are there any games that fit this criteria?

When I was younger I used to play online poker, mostly on the phone, I think the app was called zynga poker??

Is there a trustworthy website, maybe open-source or run by good people that has a decent user base?

Edit: I don't want to gamble for money, just for free and virtual chips.

From Robot Entertainment, of course.

Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap is an action-packed third-person shooter and trap defense game. Evolve as an orc-slaying War Mage through rogue-lite choices and obliterate, eviscerate, and incinerate massive hordes with up to four players.

  • Four-player co-op
  • Deeper progression systems
  • Rogue-lite build options
  • Expanded level variety and vast outdoor fantasy environments
  • Spectacular physics and more ridiculous orc deaths
  • Visceral third-person shooter and melee combat

Woohoo! Can't wait!!
