Similar to how Mastodon offers an open source, distributed version of X, the fediverse is getting its own TikTok competitor. This week, an app called Loops began accepting signups on its new platform for sharing short, looping videos. Still in the early stages, Loops is not yet open sourced, nor has it completed its integration with ActivityPub, the protocol that powers Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, and other federated apps.

I've only been on Lemmy a few days and I've already witnessed a lot of thinly veiled transphobia, anything from people dismissing the existence of trans people, to trying to claim we are predators. I've also seen people downvoted in the general communities for expressing trans support, or seemingly for no reason other than simply being openly trans or visibly queer. I know it's an ongoing effort to moderate transphobia on Lemmy, and the fediverse as a whole. We have to also address mentions of thinly veiled transphobia and transphobic users. Transphobia isn't just a differing opinion, it is a dangerous hateful sentiment which causes harm to vulnerable people and it needs to be addressed, at the instance and community level. We need to put in the effort to identify transphobic dogwhistles and language used by transphobes to eradicate this type of behavior from our communities and servers alike.

Some people will argue that the light stuff isn't something to worry about, but that's not true. This is a tactic they use to blend in with normies and make them think that nothing they are doing or saying is wrong. It's what transphobic right-wing YouTubers and Facebook users do to avoid being banned for hate speech. We are better than these corporations though, Fediverse is run by communities and for the users, we should not let these things slide as easily as Corporations do, they're in it to make money, we... We're in it to create a community for the users. Part of that means kicking out those who don't have all our best interests at heart.

From the first moment I first went online in 1996, forums were the main place to hang out. In fact the very first thing I did was join an online forum run by the Greek magazine “PC Master” so I could directly to my favourite game reviewers (for me it was Tsourinakis, for those old enough to remember).

Here is an update that explains what we have been working on recently (apologies for not having these for a few months, summer vacations and all that). This should allow average users to keep up with development, without reading Github comments or knowing how to program.

@privacyguard added Single-Sign-On (SSO) support to lemmy (this still needs some UI work and testing, but the bulk of the work is done). Special thanks to Privacy Portal for working on this!

@carlos-cabello added a way to filter posts by title only (and not body) when searching.

@Freakazoid182 added custom emoji and tagline views.

@nothing4u made our scheduled cleanup job delete denied users.

@sunaurus made a few image proxy fixes.

@sleepless has been working hard on lemmy-ui-leptos, which may eventually replace lemmy-ui. He made improvements to how posts are displayed; made SI formatting consistent with how the current UI handles it; added translations; added post content actions, creator, and community listings; and made some plugins for markdown-it.

@nutomic cleaned up the issue tracker by closing invalid issues and adding tags like good first issue. He also made some simple improvements, like adding a category to RSS feeds, fixing an issue with activitypub ids, and removing the enable_nsfw setting in favor of content_warning.

@dessalines integrated a new rust clearurls library into lemmy that will remove tracking params for any post or comment text (Much thanks to @jendrikw for creating this library), increased the bio max length from 300 to 1000, removes lemmy's reliance on openssl, made the list logins response more uniform, added the ability to restore content on an unban, added a default comment sort type for both the local site, and your user.

Support development

@dessalines and @nutomic are working full-time on Lemmy to integrate community contributions, fix bugs, optimize performance and much more. This work is funded exclusively through donations.

If you like using Lemmy, and want to make sure that we will always be available to work full time building it, consider donating to support its development. Recurring donations are ideal because they allow for long-term planning. But also one-time donations of any amount help us.
