Bluesky is so obviously trying to commercialize what we already have in the #fedi.

If you self-host your instance (increasingly cheaper and user-friendly proposition), you gain full and complete control over your presence, data, and moderation, with no intermediary. Or you can join one of the many affinity-based instances if you don't want to deal with the admin work. Either way, you might pay a few of dollars a month.

Watch #Bluesky repeat the same cycle as Twitter—centralization, commercialization and failure all over again.

Stimmen die Zahlen auf #fedidb eigentlich echt, dass #Friendica weniger User hat als Sharkey oder Firefish? Ich weiß nicht warum, aber irgendwie hatte ich Friendica immer als so eines der größeren Urgesteine im #Fediverse neben Mastodon im Kopf, gerade auch durch die vielen Föderationsmöglichkeiten.

Könnte vielleicht auch daran liegen, dass Friendica einen Wikipedia-Artikel hat; bei Sharkey oder Firefish hat nicht mal die Basis Misskey einen.

The recent downtime of the #InternetArchive reminded me

(a) How vital the site is for my own work. Fortunately, I save pretty much all old books I need for my work to my hard drive, so I am not totally lost without it - but still, most of the links to the individual folk tales I am translating go to online archives, and the Internet Archive is the most important among them.

(b) How storing all this vital cultural heritage stuff at one single site is a terrible idea. Today, the Internet Archive might be taken down by hackers. Tomorrow, the site might commit suicide by lawyers. And in a possible future, a fascist US government might take the site down out of sheer spite.

While there are a fair number of other, more specialized digital libraries out there, too many public domain works are only available at the Internet Archives. And another huge percentage is stored only at the Internet Archive and Google Books, which is not a lot better.

We need a more distributed archive system where all these works can stored on multiple servers around the world - yet where users can search through all of them with comparable ease. Only in this way will our digital cultural heritage be truly safe.

Perhaps a #Fediverse - based approach could work? Something like #Bookwyrm , but with actual data storage?

I missed my 15 year anniversary on the #fediverse! I first got on identi.ca in May 2009, then after an unfortunate twitter detour, got back on the right track in 2018, when I became active on aktivix's now defunct instance indy.im.

One day I will find a way to migrate that worthwhile content here.

Released on October 22, 2024. Initial release. Finally, Hollo 0.1.0 released! Hollo is a single-user federated microblogging software which is ActivityPub-enabled and powered by Fedify.

The most recent #update for #Mastodon has reached three fourth of the followers from @[email protected], patching the #preview-bug for them. So we should see most of the traffic coming from here again. Yet, the number of visits from the #Fediverse to heise.de hasn't really grown that much.

At least, the three #Twitter-alternatives are again bigger than #X, which keeps declining.

In sum, the four networks deliver half as much traffic than #Twitter alone in the beginning of 2022.

Das jüngste Update von #Mastodon hat etwa drei Viertel der Follower von @[email protected] erreicht und damit auch der Patch für den #Preview-Bug. Wir sollten also wieder so ziemlich alle Klicks sehen, die aus dem #Fediverse zu heise.de führen.
Aber so richtig zugenommen hat die Zahl der Zugriffe trotzdem nicht wirklich.

Wenigstens lagen die #Twitter-Alternativen in Summe vergangene Woche wieder mal vorn (was sie immer öfter tun). Das liegt auch am Sinkflug von #X.
