I was having a strange issue that was preventing me from logging in on my system76 machine and it was resolved by manually setting the keyboard brightness.

I can't resolve (ping, ssh) any computer on my network from a newly installed minimal Gnome Desktop F39 on a laptop; since it's minimal, it's possible something's missing from the installation.

trying from the laptop gives:

$ ping server.local
ping: server.local: Temporary failure in name resolution

pinging .box static DNS entries as well as IP addresses works. all other computers can resolve each other and the new laptop (1 debian, 1 fedora, 1 macOS), some have static, some dynamic IPs. they all get the DNS IP of my pi-hole, which resolves everything fine. resolve.conf and all other relevant files are stock. avahi and systemd-resolve are running and report no issues. same behaviour with WiFi and LAN.

I could switch to static IPs and assign e.g. .box suffixes all around via local DNS but I don't want to do that, this setup is/was working on every other PC.

any ideas what I'm missing?

edit: just booted off of a live USB with F39, resolves server.local just fine. so I'm missing something in my installation, right?

edit II: installed it (minimal) on another laptop, same deal - no .local resolution.

So happy to announce that finally, Swayora reached a usable state.
Keep in mind, that I was working on the installer more than the sway configuration itself.
So, keep checking it out for updates 😉

I'm on fedora Silverblue and just saw that firefox is still on 118 whereas 120 is about to be released.

I found https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/firefox which says that on fedora 39 firefox is on 119 yet it isn't on my machine.

Is Bazzite what one would call an "immutable" OS? I found this part of the FAQ but am still unclear as my understanding isn't very deep.

Hello!, i was thinking about running deduplication on my system to save some space, and wanted to know if Fedora already runs it in background, or if the function is enabled on OStree spin? Thanks!

Hi

I just installed fedora, and my mouse stops working after a suspend. I tried sudo modprobe -r psmouse but that results in an error: "modprobe: FATAL: Module psmouse is builtin." Any ideas as to what else i could try?

Thanks :)

I'd like to be able to install all apps from flathub. Do I have to reinstall all fedora-flatpak apps?

Hey, everyone! I'm what you might call an "intermediate user" I guess, and I usually manage to track down problem on my own, but here goes...

I'm using the Fedora Workstation 39 Beta 1.1, Just installed it and am up and running, Everything is working well, but I have a weird issue in that most (but not all) GTK4 apps are ignoring my Dark Style settings. Nautilus is light, for instance, but Console is not. The Wallpaper follows the light/dark setting, and once I tweaked it, so do the GTK3 apps.

I'm not sure how to provide more info. I have tried gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme=1 in ~/.config/gtk-4.0/settings.ini which seems to do nothing, I can't find a dbus entry, and I haven't really installed much, other than the adw-gtk3 theme, Gnome Console, and some flatpaks.

Any ideas?

ETA: TUrns out I'm not the only one; it may be a problem with the update: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/dark-mode-broke-after-last-update-on-fedora-39/89965

Part of the problem with playing with a beta, I guess...

Hello!, so i have 2 services in my .config/systemd/user one of them is named flatpak-update.service, and the other find-and-delete.service. When i write journalctl --user-unit flatpak it autocomplete like any other command in bash, but if i try the same with journalctl --user-unit find it don't autocomplete, as the service didn't exist, but if i type journalctl --user-unit find-and-delete.service i list the service logs as normal, why it isn't autocompleting the name?, thank for any answer or suggestion

Why should we install wordpress using dnf install wordpress rather than just downloading the files? is it because those PHP file won't work due to SELinux, or is it something else?

Also, if I am importing NGINX config files and database backups (made using msqldump) from another server, do I have to do something with them before they can work?

Another thing that I have seen is that in the nginx.conf file in Fedora, the user is set to nginx, while on other operating systems it is set to www-data by default. Why is that?

I am asking this because I want to migrate from a Debian server to a Fedora Server (preferably on ARM).

The Fedora Docs team is hosting the first in a series of workshops on how to contribute to our documentation!

If you're interested in helping to create a Linux database that hopefully gets as good as the Arch or Gentoo Wikis, check the Magazine post about it: https://fedoramagazine.org/docs-workshop-virtually-writing-together/

Werte Kollegen.

I need CUDA on Workstation for an offline open source AI training tool. Running the Nvidia bin blob is trash with how often fedora updates the kernel. The automated kernel module build is awesome, but now I need CUDA and the documentation is all over the place and outdated. I know it is because it is shitvidia. AMD doesn't make competitive laptop hardware with 16GB of GPU memory or more and nothing with full CUDA compatibility with HIPS yet. I'm disabled where a laptop is the only option for ergonomics. Does anyone here know a proven path for sustainable CUDA on Fedora?

Hi everyone,

I’m a happy Fedora 38 user on my Surface Go 1.

In fact I’m so happy with it that I just wanted to clone the whole thing with Clonezilla and put it on my girlfriend’s MacBook Pro which has reached end of life support for MacOs.

Sadly on the Surface Go it’s almost impossible to boot from an USB drive (had to rely on windows recovery to do it the first time, might be usb-a to usb-c adaptor related) and I’ll really have to do a clean install on her Mac.

For such situations, I find it crazy that you don’t have an effective graphic tool to fo an easy backup. Especially because Fedora is so great for everything else.

You could say, use Timeshift, but it would mean doing some alterations I’m not at ease with as I don’t want to end up destroying the system I’m trying to backup and clone.

Does anyone know if it’s on the developers roadmap?
