Fountain Pens

I've been using this pen for a while, not sure how long with the hero 234 ink. It's perfect. The nib and the pen itself still has the old moonman branding.

Do you have a workhouse pen?

Do you have any inks that you wanted to buy after reading great reviews that turned out less exciting than expected?

My biggest disappointment is Diamine Skull & Roses. After seeing swatches online I expected a blue ink with a visible red sheen. Unfortunately the sheen is just not there at all, it looks like an average dark blue ink, not even blurple. I'm glad I've only bought the 30 ml bottle.

I recently cleanned ink from a converter but I seen to have gotten ink past the piston mechanism.

Any ideas as to how to fix that?

Broad nib and Diamine Communication Breakdown ink. It’s my only Sailor pen. I wish I could write something smart about it but it just writes! The engraving on the nib is a bottle of sake together with a cup and three sakura petals falling into the cup.

So I ordered a box of Green Vert Amazone cartridges from Jaques Herbin inks a little bit ago, just cracked the box and the first cartridge I pulled out was purple! I didn't expect that, and the rest of the cartridges appear to be the green I ordered. I have to wonder how often that happens.

I tend to gravitate to cheaper pens including a lot of Chinese-manufactured versions of more famous pens (clones / knockoffs), and thought it might be interesting to post some of them?

This one is one of my favorites: the Wing Sung 601. This pen comes in a variety of different plastic-body colors, which are also great - I have a burgundy version of this pen which works beautifully. The style and hooded nib are clearly an "homage" (read:clone) to the Parker 51. The history between Parker and Wing Sung is interesting and complex, and has been described in detail elsewhere with respect to Hero (which owns Wing Sung.

There is a great review of this pen at The Gentleman Stationer. The version that I have is a "Flighter" all steel body (around $25 on eBay, a bit more expensive than the plastic body version but not by too much).

The pen's big highlight is the vacumatic filling system, which works beautifully. The body of the pen acts as the reservoir allowing it to hold a ton of ink for a pen this small. I find that the pen writes very well and is tremendously reliable - never a hard start, and the construction of the pen and hooded nib have meant that there are no problems whatsoever with drying out. I've picked this pen up after a few months of no use and it writes immediately. The steel body adds a little heft, which I like, and the pen is extremely durable. The hooded nib also makes for a good "stealth FP" experience, if you're in a setting where you don't want to draw too much attention to the pen.

All in all, it's a great pickup for not a huge amount of cash, and has found it's way into heavy rotation for me.

As I said in the post title, I bought this as a self reward. It was between this and a Waterman Carene L’Essence de Bleu, but I ultimately settled on this. Haven’t even inked it yet - wish me luck!!

My Kaco EDGE is drying out, even when using it the next day. I feel that the issue is related to the converter, because usually I can fix the issue (even for a couple of days) by driving the converter just a little bit outwards and then cleaning the pen. The converter is a rather cheap one made of plastic. It came in a set with the pen and the schmidt EF nib. I saw this set of many places, but it looked like this:

What is the "right way" to fix this. I know the TWSBI Eco wants to be greased regularly – is this a thing with converters?

Figured I'd make my first post here with my newest pen. This was a little gift to myself for 49 successful orbits of the sun. A polished Gravitas Skittle Paisley. I've wanted this one from the first time I saw it.

As the title says. I’m looking for orange ink. Not too bright, not too muted, ideally tangerine 🍊 colour but a bit dirty - imagine a tangerine tree growing next to a busy road. Available in Europe.

So, I like to write simple notes, journaling, to-do lists, or essays/fiction with a fountain pen whenever possible, and I'm trying to find a good journal or planner to use. My Pilot and Diamine inks feather a lot on the paper I'm currently using, and that's really the main problem I want to address.

What brands or products would you recommend? What kind of paper do you like best?

I recently started using a tablet and pen (Wacom Intuos S if you're curious) for work and I cannot keep track of the pen - it's slim, black, and blends in with my desk. I know that this is the fountain pen community rather than an ergonomics community, but I bet you all have tips for a pen stand/holder. What do you use to keep your pen(s) close at hand?

I love that Diamine works together with the community to create new inks.

These have been out for a few months - have you had a chance to try them out? What did you think?

I got my first fountain pen around late 2017, curious about the writing experience. It was some kind of Jinhao (not pictured) that isn't often in circulation any more because despite being labeled as a fine nib, it writes way too heavy for me.

Somtimes I look at my Pilot steel nibs (Metro and two Preras) and think I should have gotten some other sizes for variety. Then again, I really like writing with fine nibs.

My favorite tends to be whatever I wrote with most recently.

I got some TWSBI Swipes to play with and I am really pleased with them. I have some beaten up Lamy Safaris that have probably seen better days and I love my Vac 700R so I thought I would try them out, and take the opportunity to offer a little bit of content. I hadn't realised the community had moved!

So we all love pens for the pieces of art they are, but they're also tools. So, what do you write with your pens? Do you journal, do you take notes? Do you use fountain pens for everything or just certain activities?

Personally, I write a lot of snail mail letters to friends, and I also use mine to take notes. I've never done a journal before, but I'm thinking it may be useful in helping me unpack some things. Plus, Midori makes some very nice looking 3 and 5 year journals.

Just finished cleaning up my latest addition from eBay, a circa-1920 Waterman's Ideal 452 1/2V.

Hard black rubber with a sterling silver overlay. It has a fine nib with a little flex and a nice bit of bounce. It's a miniature pen at just under 4 inches long, but feels nicely balanced when posted and is a lovely writer.

I've replaced the ink sac and given it a good clean and polish, but it's in great condition and didn't need much more than that.

Suggestions for inks are very welcome!

I'm a journalist. I write a lot. Right now I use a kaweco perkeo all black fountain pen. But I want to upgrade. I'm looking for a light weight no screw fountain pen in a higher price class. It has to be durable, can take a lot on ink, an edc and around the 100 dollar mark. What do you guys recommend?
