Upgrade complete (aussie.zone)

I'm kicking off a storage upgrade on the server, expect it to proceed in the next 15 minutes and be back online shortly after.

Sorry this is a little late, I've been busy with real life this week.

I'm stating full dollar figures for simplicity, but they're all rounded/approximate to the dollar. I'm not an accountant and its close enough for our purposes.

Income

$267 AUD thanks to 25 generous donors, it is very much appreciated.

Expenses

$34 OVH server fees. Lower than normal, as OVH seem to switch services to calendar based rather than anniversary based from the second month. The July billing period covered 8 July - 31 July, August will be 1-31.
$40 Cloudflare. Due to huge volumes of egress traffic from Cloudflare in early July, I opted to pay for a month of premium in order to investigate. The cause was found and remediated. I've since dropped back to the free plan.

Balance

$193 surplus from July (Income - Expenses)
$293 carried forward from June = $486 current balance

Future

Wasabi's trial period expired on the 8th of July, so the first bill is due this month.

Domain registration, I'll be looking to extend by another year and keep it so that we always have at least 12 months paid up.

Server storage, I expect we'll need to upgrade for additional storage this month. With this upgrade I'll consider pre-paying/committing to the server for a longer period of time. This provides both a discount, and certainty to everyone that the money is put to good use.

THANK YOU

..again, to our generous donors. The offer of an @aussie.zone email address redirect is still open to any donors.

As always, if you have any questions please ask.

I was wondering whether there's any appetite to host alternative frontends? I've been using Alexandrite a bit recently, and really liking it (though would be more comfortable sending my login credentials directly to aussie.zone instead of hoping everything's legit), and some other servers are hosting that or something like Voyager for a mobile-first iOS-styled interface.

I've just removed a post that had c*&t in the title. I'm not going to get into specific rules, but I don't want that language in post titles. In comments etc in context, fine. But post titles are displayed to all users without the possibility of being filtered.

Please think of others when posting.

We love our Tassie comrades. They deserve a spot on the Aussie Zone icon.

Apologies if I'm just doing something wrong, but I seem to be having patchy results loading up communities from other instances.

E.g. this works fine: https://aussie.zone/c/[email protected]

On the other hand, this gives 404 community_not_found: https://aussie.zone/c/[email protected]

(And it definitely exists, see here: https://lemmy.world/c/music )

Any ideas?

Not sure if it's happening to anyone else, but my MalwareBytes Browser Guard keeps trying to block this Instance whenever I try to access it. Anyone know possible reasons for this? Thanks in advance for any help.

NSFW federation (aussie.zone)

Hi @[email protected] , I'm new to Lemmy and looking for a home instance, being Australian, aussie.zone seems to fit the bill.
I see one of the instance rules is "No porn".
I also see that there exists other instances such as lemmynsfw.com.
But I don't appear to be able to subscribe to the communities there.

I can see their safe for work community: https://aussie.zone/c/[email protected] but not an actual community with content such as: https://aussie.zone/c/[email protected]

Have I simply misconfigured something, or will aussie.zone not allow me to federate to nsfw communities?

I'm currently userhomed on aussie.zone and reading the All feed I see activity from an instance I have absolutely no desire to see any content from on any of their communities, but I do still want to engage in discovery via the All feed - can I block out this undesirable instance at all?

What do we think is best?

If we start bringing in all the reddit-style groups, there would be a lot of niche areas.

For example: Australian Plants, Australian Birds, Australian Wildlife, Gardening Australia, Permaculture Australia and that's just a fraction of niche areas under a larger umbrella.

Now, all this above could be under Environment or Green or something similar but at some point, if this instance got popular, would need to be fractured apart. What is best? General or lots of communities for now?

Personally I think General but later on down the track, it means some contained content would be lost to the move and it's a start again process.

Hi everyone,

As I'm sure you've seen, the lemmy fediverse has exploded in the last week or so. I'm looking for volunteers to moderate the communities that exist here on aussie.zone.

If you're interested, please make a post in the relevant community saying you'd like to volunteer, with a statement to the effect that you'll apply the rules (shown in the sidebar) fairly and impartially.

Note that due to the way Lemmy currently works, to make anyone a mod they need to post within the community for me to grant the mod status. I can't do it from a reply here.

This community (!meta) will remain with only admins as moderators, to be used for mod-admin communication as required.

I've seen similar sticky posts popping up in different meta / admin communities on other instances, any interest in creating a cross-post and pinning it to this meta community too? It might help newcomers to wrap their head around Lemmy if they arrive here without hitting any of the other Lemmy sites first.

I just threw a post on lemmy.ml/c/Australia mentioning this instance. I saw it was in some comments but wanted it a bit more visible.

I hope that's OK. I think instance and community advertisement should be allowed for a while so people can coalesce to the more appropriate ones rather than fragment everywhere.

It's a zippy little instance too! Hopefully this stays up.

I have another account on lemmy.ml and can't see any of the aussie.zone communities when I search for them, even if I provide a proper URL as outlined here.

Maybe this is a problem on their side or just a bug, but I thought I'd mention it here in case there's an instance config issue here that can be fixed.

IMHO it would be nice if the communities here showed up on the biggest Lemmy instance to help aussies find their way here.

Edit: Looks like this took care of itself, likely just server congestion on the lemmy.ml side as others suggested. Thanks all!

Wondering if there's value in an Australia wide community as well? Some stuff just doesn't fit so well under 1 city

Enjoying exploring Aussie Zone so far. Thanks to @lodion, i think, for hosting! I'm an endemic lurker coming over from Reddit. Trying a few things on 'Jerboa for Lemmy', learning the ropes, so sorry for editing and other mistakes, please let me know when I make them.

To the actual point of the post,

Theres a few different spots, other instances/communities, that I's wondering if 'Aussie Zone' should/can link the feed to. So we can begin to coalesce an Aussie user base, without all having to pile into the one instance, or individually find these other places and have duplication across communities of similar topics.

For example there is, lemmy.perthchat.org (instance) [email protected] (community) lemmy.nz (instance) (would probs be good to keep tabs on these dodgy lookin fellas) And i'm sure there are others,

Maybe i've got the wrong end of the stick, but it seems like we could end up with several concurrent 'Australia' chats leading to fragmentation and reduced engagement as a result?

Sorry for the essay.

Hi all,

I was able to sign up no problem, but when I try to log in on a private browsing window the button just turns into a spinning icon that continues forever...

I figured I'd try logging out and logging back in, but I couldn't log out.

I finally just wiped the cookies for the site, which of course meant I was no longer logged in, and couldn't log in.

I could, however, reset my password (N.B. you of course need to have set an email to be able to do that), and that logged me back in.

So it seems something is amiss with the session-management.

Happy to provide more info if it helps.

Anyone experiencing similar issues?

I know hosting servers isn't cheap, it would be wonderful if there was a way users could contribute to the running costs in some way (e.g. buymeacoffee or Patreon). I certainly would like to :)

45

Can a community please be created for users of /r/CricketAus?

Thank you!

46

I noticed that this instance seems to have community creation locked to admin users, though nothing in the rules / sidebar mentions this.

Would you be open to allowing users to create their own communities here in the future? Perhaps once there are some more active users to avoid diluting the communities we already have?

I'm very new to the fediverse and lemmy, so please let me know if this isn't something that would be feasible for this instance.

I can see there's a few different ways to donate etc. and was curious if there were any recommendations?

Wanting to throw some support their way with the influx of Reddit refugees likely on the way (of which I'm one)
