MODERATORS

Hello Feddit,

I'm trying to get my foot in the door of the moderating world, but with no luck this far. I aspire to make this a better place! If there's an enthusiastic community out there somewhere, that needs a helping hand from an enthusiastic moderator, then you can consider me.

That's all.

Cant login to my account MJB9000, first i got the 404site.ban, then found my account was banned through another account which is weird because this is my first hour on the site and i haven’t interacted to done anything yet, modlog doesn’t show anything, cleared cache, reset password, tried to login with email, nothing worked.

One thing changed was after the successful password reset i used to get site ban 404 error, now I get “logged in” but when I log in it doesn’t do anything and I’m stuck.

Please help

How long would a mod have to be inactive in order to successful take control of a community with inactive mods? Just curious because there are 2 communities I would like to take control if the mods are inactive if possible.

I just want a sidebar to mess around with first before I make the changes to my actual community's sidebar.

So moderators/admins, I am the founder and moderator of c/politics. For context, I hired a moderator who I will not name, but he is controversial with users for his views and demand he be remove. I ignored them and continued with my day, then later I received this message from him.

Is he impersonating an admin to try to get us to remove the user as I don't see an admin on his name and his account was created 7 days ago. Just asking if you guys heard of him.

Thanks, yeah just an impersonator trying to get me to remove an important mod.

Appreciate clarification about the 'block user' function:

1- Will I no longer be able to see their posts, profile, or any existing messages with them? What if they post in a community that I moderate, will I still be able to see their posts?

2- Will they still be able to see my posts and comments on my profile or in communities where I participate, and can they reply to them?

3- Will they receive any indication that I have blocked them?

4- If I already have a conversation thread with them, will it remain in my inbox, and will they be able to continue the conversation?

I see there is a setting for Show Notifications for New Posts but I haven't wanted to select it as at face value I would see that as all posts in any community. Does that setting by chance only apply to communities we moderate? If not is there a setting somewhere for that?

I set up a few with icons when I created them, but now I can’t find where to go back and add an icon to the ones I didn’t originally give one to

As is stated in the title, I created and moderated [email protected]. According to the modlog, this community was removed 10 days ago. The modlog doesn't show me who removed the community. I understand the community wouldn't necessarily be everyone's cup of tea, but the actions taken seem improper.

EDIT

After making my case via email to [email protected], I received the following response:

"We would rather not have a prolife community on our instance. We were getting a lot of reports about it and we have enough on our plate. I'm sure you can find an instance that better suits your needs."

This community was incredibly small (19 subscribers), had less than 10 postings, and had several waves of trollings. Yet, the admins of lemmy.world would rather do away with this community than bother to review if it has broken any rules or is the target of trolling/bullying. I take nothing away from the right to run their instance as they see fit. Perhaps the Code of Conduct should also explicitly state "we reserve the right to do anything we want, regardless of any published rules".

Hey all, I moderate quite a few communities and have noticed that the Moderates list has gotten very wonky. It used to be alphabetical but now it just seems random?

67

The c/cosplay community has no image/banner/description/sidebar, and the 'moderator' who created it has no activity anywhere except for setting up several dozen NSFW-titled communities the same 'nothing but a community name' way.

I want this community to exist, and from the response to posts yesterday & today it seems others do as well. Is it possible to request to be made a moderator of that so I can try to cultivate more of a community instead of an unmoderated space?

Hi all,

I was wondering what everyone is putting in their sidebars? So far I have:

  • Community Description
  • Community Rules
  • Community Specific Lemmy Usage Tips
  • Similar Community Recommendations

My community, [email protected], is small and relatively quiet for now but with Lemmy growing it's only a matter of time before bots show up.

Have any mods of larger communities dealt with any bots yet? Does the platform have any protection built in like AutoModerator, or will we end up using third party tools such as BotDefense? What has been your experience so far and what should moderators be doing to prepare?

edit: to clarify, i mean bad bots e.g. spam bots

This thread showed up in my community today, and it brought to mind that I don't think there's a policy/guideline in place for Lemmy.World to handle community closures/abandonment.

Presumably where abandoned communities are concerned, the idea is to rely on folks contacting the admins to request them so they can take on moderation & try to build up activity. For closures, however...It gets a bit more complicated.

I'm sure it would depend on the circumstances, but what would we want any such policy/guideline to look like? E.g. should moderators have to give some advance notice or open the closure to discussion, so that if the moderators simply found themselves too busy to moderate they could find someone else to take on their responsibilities?

Personally I have an idea of how I'd handle it, but I'm sure many other mods may as well, so it seems like having some policy/guideline concerning this would be a good idea going forward.

Hello there, requesting to take over [email protected] as the mod there seems to have disappeared and the community is dead, would like to revive it myself.

The way Lemmy is organised tends to focus users on new and popular content, which means that slower moving ongoing conversations tend to sink in the page and get overlooked. A lot of valuable content is created in those slower discussions, so I am trying to set up ways to keep them visible and findable. I believe for a good group a moderator needs to be part librarian, not just rule enforcer.

I am creating ongoing topic threads which are linked to from the sidebar, and will also be linking them in the daily discussion thread where most activity in my group currently occurs. I am also looking into creating regular posts for specific topic discussions, which should help searchability. Making the system more complicated leads to users not following it though, so I want it to be as simple as possible to use and not have too many things like that happening at one time.

I would love to hear any other suggestions or about things you are doing to set up the structure of your groups.

Can I make a rule for my community that threads users will be banned?
If .world doesn't defederate and threads users find their way into my community, I want to ban any that interact. Using anything meta related is a fundamental violation of the values I hold for using FOSS and the fediverse.
Would doing so violate the guidelines? I don't see anything suggesting it would, but want to check.

How do people go about finding moderators they trust for a community? I could find someone who posts a lot and then ask them in a private message, but maybe there is some other way. Do people mainly mod people they know personally? I kind of want to find someone who is in a completely different time zone so they would be awake when I am asleep.

The previous maximum displayed banner size is 912 x 300.

The current maximum is 1770 x 300 but dynamically changes as you shrink your browser window.

The community icon remains the same at 150 x 150.

You can see how this messed up even this community's banner by cutting off the lemmy.world mascot at the top. If you have text in your banner, you'll need to position them closer to the center than before. It can be... mildly infuriating.
