Tiki

Description: Tiki culture is a celebration of tropical escapism. It's a longing for the time when Pacific islands were still exotic locales that inspired Donn Beach and Trader Vic to create their own versions back home. It all started in 1934 with the first Don the Beachcomber tiki restaurant, and was rejuvenated in the mid-90's with the printing of The Book of Tiki by Sven Kirsten. Pull up a chair, sip your Mai Tai, and study the tsantsa-covered ceiling while listening to the sounds of the Hukilau.

What is tiki: Things that are tiki: Tiki mugs. Tiki bars. Tiki cocktails. Aloha shirts. Luaus. Witco. Oceanic Arts. South Pacific culture. Trader Vic's. Don The Beachcomber. Martin Denny. Les Baxter. Mai Tais.

Things that arent tiki: Hot rods. Lowbrow Art (Rat Fink et al). Surf music. Jimmy Buffet. Margaritas. Science Fiction.

So during the Pandemic I was playing around with creating my own online radio station. Having some time on my hands I took it a little further and also created an Alexa skill so you can stream from your echo devices.

I had created quit an extensive playlist of mid century Tiki, Polynesian, and Hawaiian inspired music. I mostly built this station to use in my own backyard tiki bar, but wanted to share with the community.

There are a couple ways you can listen, if you have an internet radio streaming app or you want to stream from your browser just use the following URL https://radio.theforbiddencoconut.com/stream.ogg

If you want to add the Alexa skill to your echo device you can go here. https://tinyurl.com/forbiddencoconut

Enjoy and Aloha,

To celebrate their 8th anniversary, Hidden Harbor released a limited run of mugs. One hundred were made, fifty in Sky High Blue and fifty in Galactic Green like this one.

I thought it was an interesting variation of a great drink.

1 large handful fresh blueberries

Muddle in the bottom of the shaker

Add ice to the shaker

1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice

1/4 oz 2:1 simple (demarara or turbinado preferred)

1/4 oz Orgeat

Just under 1/2 oz Cointreau

2 oz blended aged rum (tonight's rum was Plantation 5 year)

Double strain into a glass over ice

I am enamored with the idea of hosting a tiki party for my friends. Have you ever hosted one? What was it like? Any tips?

What got you started with Tiki? My start was How To Drink and Greg's recommendation of Smugglers Cove. Read the book, started buying rum and planning a home bar lol. I had been getting into making cocktails but never thought about exotic cocktails before watching Gregs Mai Tai episode.

My partner and I made a trip to The Inferno Room for their mug release with Big Toe last weekend. Initially, we were set on the brown variant but had to go with the yellow when we set eyes on it in person.

Made some grapefruit super juice so figured I’d try a Mai tai. Replacing the lime with grapefruit. It’s interesting and refreshing but I feel the grapefruit gets lost.

I scored this Hamilton Beach Model 18 mixer for 40 bucks, almost 100 years old and still works. Just refreshed the motor brushes and replaced the jacked up cord. Cant wait to make some cocktails with this bad boy.

I am heading down to Palm Springs next week any Tiki recommendations? I have been to the Reef, but wanted to check out some other bars.

Just an FYI for anyone putting together a tiki event on a budget: solid-color inflatable balls from Dollar Tree work great as ad hoc glass floats for a party.

We had some LED puck lights from a past event that were simple to hide in the top rope (with a layer of electrical tape to block any other light leakage). They illuminate through the ball for fantastic ambience.

You can follow Batjakknots to weave the rope, or just improvise with cuts of cheap netting/simple knots like I did, it all ends up capturing the effect pretty well for ~$3 per light

I was in Vegas for one night and had to choose what tiki bar to go to. My go to is usually Golden Tiki but I chose to hit up Frankie's, it did not disappoint. It was crazy slow which is super rare, but it allowed us to chat with the bartender and she was great, fun conversation, super good drinks, and lots of knowledge of tiki culture.

My wife and I ordered three drinks in total the Kahiki Kai, Lapu Lapu, and the Mai Tai. The drinks where delicious, and strong. I had the lapu lapu and the mai tai and was feeling it.

The ambiance was cool as well, the original design was created by Bamboo Ben, who also created the decor inside Disney's Enchanted TIki Room.

I recommend checking it out if your in town.

Hello everyone, as a member of the r/tiki subreddit for quite a long time, and after the Reddit drama, I figured why not give the tiki folks a place to share in the fediverse. This community is unapologetically inspired by r/tiki as you may have noticed from the description and guidelines. I can only hope for those who jump ship from Reddit can feel they have a safe harbor here.

Aloha Ohana
