Sometimes you just have to take a hit and be late for work.
Depends how important the job is to you, eh.
That's what PTO is for, when you just have to take the day
The amount of times I've just decided to take the day because I felt like it is not enough. I still have almost 100 hours of PTO built up and about 80 hours of vacation time.
I hope you realise how much of a luxury it is to take a day's leave à la minute.

Well I think even an ideal society would involve responsibilities that require people to be at a certain place at a certain time!
I think in an ideal society that most jobs would have enough hands on deck that an employee or 2 calling out on a day wouldn't be the end of the world
In my current job we build PTO at a rate of 1 hour per 40 and vacation at a flat rate of 10 hours per month. So basically every 2 months we can take a day without notice and every month the we can take a day with notice.
