Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), after being removed as House speaker Tuesday, told fellow Republican lawmakers that he won’t seek the position again, according to two sources familiar with his plans who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations. The vote to remove him was the first such removal in congressional history. McCarthy’s removal was sought by hard-right members of his own party. Democrats did not provide votes that would have been needed to save him. The move puts the House in uncharted territory as it searches for a leader.

I don’t see why anyone would want the job in the current situation. If were going to have, essentially, three parties in the House, we may need to adopt a more Westminster style Speaker, where the position is avowedly non-partisan. They moderate the debate and oversee procedures, but they allow all parties to put forward legislative proposals.

Maybe it’s because I haven’t yet seen the flaws but doesn’t that seem far better than the current system? Blocking popular legislation because the majority party (and commonly just an extreme faction of that party even) oppose it always seemed kind of insane.

Almost anything that involved the elected officials actually fulfilling their duties to the constituents would be preferable over the current system of man-children and spoiled brats throwing tantrums.

Unfortunately it's a disease we have to fight from the bottom up. Rid our communities of corrupt and lazy politicians, sheriffs, judges, etc. We continue to vote in only those who work to better the country for all citizens, not just a privileged few, and the cancer will finally be purged.

If we don't fix the system soon, our ability to change it will be eroded away until our system of democracy falls.
