Asymmetric bezels low key bug me. Are there technical reasons why they're hard?

You mean liake top and bottom bezels being different sizes?

Its due to tons of reasons but usually its driven by what is in the phone and where it is placed.

Both. Side bezels. Top and bottom. I'd just like consistency and symmetry.

My daily driver is a Pixel 4XL. It has a lot of stuff crammed into the forehead. But with notches and holepunches that doesn't seem like it should be necessary anymore.

It isn't necessary any more, which is why all Pixels since the 4a have had small bezels all the way around. You literally got the last Pixel with a thick forehead.

As to why they're not all perfectly symmetrical on all phones... I've seen a few answers:

  • Cost; it's expensive to shrink the bezel that the display connector is under
  • Design style
  • Shrinking all as much as possible, which typically leads to the side bezels being thinner than the top and bottom
