I realize this isn't quite the answer you're looking for, but I've found that a modified DualShock controller feels quite ergonomic and easier (at least for me and friends that have tried it) to handle.
My main modification is rather simple, just basically cut off the thumb sticks and file the tops of the remaining hemispheres down smooth.
Seriously feels much easier to grip.
Just a thought from my gaming experiences.
Dude that's genius! I've been gaming awhile and I've never heard of that modification. I rarely used the stick for movement because it's hard for me to control as easily. There is an extra controller laying around, so I'll give it a shot this weekend. I know at least several Street Fighter pros use a DualShock, so I probably shouldn't give up on it too fast. Thanks for the thought!
Heads up that naturally due to the change in leverage of the thumb 'balls', it'll make the analog controls more sensitive. But at the same time it puts much less stress on your thumb knuckles, and really does make the controller much more comfortable to grip.
Best of luck, and if you do try this mod, I hope to hear back and see what you think of the results.
Curious, did you ever happen to try my modded thumb stick idea?..
