yes, I agree, it's annoying for users who don't want to see that stuff to have to manually block all the communities.
hopefully user-based instance blocking will become a thing.

Can't you just block the instance from your profile?
Question: if I got myself banned from the NSFW instance, would it still show up in my feed, and just prevent me from posting there?
that's a good question, i'm not 100% sure. I'm guessing that you're correct, in that it would still show in your feed but you couldn't post there?
I like this approach. NSFW shouldn't show up in /all for lemmy.ca, but we absolutely shouldn't defederate from that instance. They are providing an important service
Yeah I've been blocking each individual community as it pops up on my feed which feels like whack-a-mole
i agree with this. would also block country/foreign language instances I'm unable to engage with. For now I've blocked individual communities and NSFW. The NSFW block works for me but blocking communities instead of an instance is inefficient.
One of the most controversial things Reddit did was hiding porn from r/all, this doesn't seem like a good idea. I feel like blurring it or something would be a better option (which probably isn't possible now?)
I can't remember where I saw this, but it's working for me:
