There's a button to "sort" folders in the settings which sorts the currently existing folders alphabetically. Then when you create a new folder it gets put at the bottom. Can we just have them sort alphabetically automatically?

Also when you click sort, it only sorts the top-level folders. The subfolders don't get sorted at all.

This is the kind of rough-around-the-edges stuff that Proton really needs to sort out before adding more and more services.

The sort button absolutely shouldn't sort subfolders. I do think there should be an option to always automatically sort alphabetically, though

Why shouldn't subfolders be alphabetical? It's logical.

Because people could want them in a specific manual order other than using the alphabet. Well, you could put a number as prefix to order them, I know, just pointing the fact.

But that same logic should apply to top level folders. It doesn't make sense to on have some folders alphabetized but not others.

There should be an option for the cascading sorting but it shouldn't be default. I want to change the things I am interacting with in that moment and not something way down. Maybe there was a reason not to sort it alphabetical.

But folders organize different things and depending on what type of organization it is, I’d want things sorted differently

If you have chosen to sort a subfolder, or if you use an option like "always sort," then I agree. But if you just happen to be at the top level folder, I don't think subfolders should be sorted when you click "sort," because they may be in an order that you want and sorting is an action that shouldn't be destructive (unless intentionally destructive).

Numbering the folders isn't dynamic though. If you add a folder later you might need to rename others, which is annoying in itself but then would break any filters applied to them too. I'd rather just organize them as I want manually. It's not hard to drag and drop them.

I 100% do not want my folders sorted alphabetically. The importance and workflow of my folders doesn't fit into that scheme.

I love the fact that I can drag my folders into my preferred order.
