I've heard a lot of people want to change app names. Which I'm totally fine with! I've heard a lot of love for the name "Voyager"

So, thoughts? Do you prefer renaming? Do you like the name "Voyager"? Any other good ideas?

I like Wefwef. It is unique while Voyager is quite boring.

Wefwef is weirdly arresting. I know not what it means, but it has a ring to it that makes it unique.

Voyager is just meh. More of the same.

Yeah unique and weird names bring memory retention and invokes curiosity to attract new users.

+1 for Voyager

Apollos chief epithet, Phoebus is my vote. Though it seems to only be common among the ancients.

~~But wouldn't that damage your.. brand recognition, so to speak? When someone doesn't know you've changed your name and therefore can't find you, they'll assume you don't exist anymore.~~

Nvm all that, they'll learn. ;)

Voyager sounds way, way better than Wefwef, plus it's in the same theme as Apollo, so that's great!

My vote for wefwef since it‘s unique and snappy.

Stick with wefwef. It has an originality unlike voyager (plenty of those)

Voyager is fine, although Wef Wef is such a nice, unique name I actually love it a lot.

Another GrecoRoman god (in the style of Apollo, as an homage)?

I like WefWef. like someone else mentioned, it makes me think of a little puppy learning to growl or bark, lol. Mostly though, its6 unique, easy to type, and gloriously well suited to finding via search engines. If you google "wefwef", the top result is your app's Github project, and the next few results are about the app as well. If you change to something like "Voyager", theres an awful lot of competition for those search results. It'll get buried under results about the space project and Star Trek. On a personal level aside from that, I'd vote for staying wefwef myself.

Ez wefwef

For many ppl RIF is Reddit. For me wefwef is Lemmy.

Don't change.

NCC-1701. No bloody A, B, C, or D.

I like Voyager since it's aweb app too, like it can "voyage" to any platform. Or even referring to federation, you can "voyage" between instances.

I like the name wefwef reminds me of a cute dog barking at me.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I love Voyager!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I prefer Wefwef, especially the dog barking sound. As an alternative I propose Lemlem - which sounds like a dog drinking.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Voyager sounds safer overall, but wefwef is cute and should be kept somewhere

I would love to have it as Voyager, because the app seems to be Apollo's spiritual successor so might as well embrace the identity. Also, seeing that there are concerns that Voyager is taken by X or Y the simple addition of LM to the name should make distinct and free from any attachments. So:

Voyager LM

I cast my vote

"Athena". Same mythology theme as Apollo.

Functionality is what will keep people but having a better name, and establishing this as a spiritual successor to Apollo, will help get people through the door.

Change it if you want but “Voyager” sounds like some corporate nothing app named by bean pushers and commitees.

Someone already owns voyager.com - naming a product can be difficult these days as most common names are taken.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Something like Voyager as suggested would be much more friendly to new users

Though personally I like both.

Adding my vote to keep wefwef. I think it's more fun than Voyager or other options that have been proposed.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Voyager, absolutely.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I prefer voyager, or even “voyage”.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Lemmynade? 🍋

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I like the name, to be honest

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I think wefwef is a silly name and I’m surprised that so many people in the comment section like it, because I find the name to be cringeworthy (sorry).

But of course, I will still continue to use this app regardless of what it’s called, just like I still use DuckDuckGo as my search engine, despite it having a ridiculous name lol.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (6 children)

Having a silly and unique name helps the app in peoples memory retention. Imagine if it was edgy but forgettable. Nobody will remember it and it won't stand out amongst the multitude of lemmy apps being developed at the moment.

Wewef also invoke curiosity.

"What the hell is a wefwef?"
