I don't really understand your issue. You cannot subscribe on an instance on which you don't have an account, so you always subscribe on your "home" instance. And for me, Liftoff does exactly the right thing. My account is on feddit.de, and I just subscribed to [email protected], and just to make sure, I had Liftoff list All posts, tapped on the community-link for "AI Generated [email protected]", and then tapped "subscribe". Sure enough, I'm now subscribed to "AI Generated [email protected]" on feddit.de. Witness the beauty of federation.

So weird. Anyway, I just tried it from sh.itjust.works and had it work fine. I think it was something with lemmy.world since it's been overloaded.
I've had this, it may be to do with app version (I've had better experiences with the most recent version), it may be to do with how the link that you've clicked is formatted, or it may be to do with the version of Lemmy lemmy.world is running, though I a little doubtful of the last bit being the reason
