This is a Toki Pona community for socialists to chat, make art, and share their experiences with the Toki Pona constructed language!

Toki Pona is a philosophical artistic constructed language created by Sonja Lang in 2001. It is designed for talking about things by explaining them in simple terms. When the first official book released it had only 120 words, and since then has expanded to somewhere around 140 words!

As of the 2022 Toki Pona census there was around 1800+ speakers of the language. It's primarily spoken online and is considered one of the most popular conlangs (constructed languages) in the world.

Despite being a constructed language Toki Pona is a real language and is recognized by several institutions around the world!

Hello! nǐ hǎo! toki! Saluton!

I got the idea for a type of thread for language learners across Lemmygrad and Hexbear where we can chat about languages, natural or constructed! I hope that this can help reignite the language learning communities on Lemmygrad!

Here's some questions for you beloved language learners!

  • What language(s) are you learning?
  • What inspired you to begin learning the language(s) you chose?
  • Do you have a favorite word or phrase in the language you're learning?

Here are some links for language learners!

What language(s) are you learning?

Focused on Mandarin, with some occasional effort into other languages to mix things up, cause I'm past the initial excitement early phase of the language, so I want to make sure I don't get bored or burned out on my efforts.

What inspired you to begin learning the language(s) you chose?

Probably a number of reasons, but for one, I want to be able to understand the culture more directly, instead of through western stuff. It's also just spoken by a lot of people and by well, a very influential anti-imperialist and socialist state, so there's that too.

Do you have a favorite word or phrase in the language you’re learning?

No favorite word/phrase comes to mind, but I can say, I like the repeating a verb thing in Chinese to make it less formal, like 周末我们一起去公园走走吧!(zhōu mò wǒ men yī qǐ qù gōng yuán zǒu zǒu ba!) (Let’s go for a walk in the park this weekend!). (I lifted this example from a language site, I am not yet confident enough to draw one up on the fly from my knowledge of Mandarin.)

I will go first! I just started learning Esperanto today while Toki Pona has basically taken the backseat for me. I was inspired to pick up Esperanto after learning about the socialist and internationalist history of the language, and also about the Pasporta Servo service where Esperantists around the world invite you to stay at their home to speak Esperanto and see the place they live! So far I am finding the Esperanto language to be a little silly while also having a place for some truly epic and beautiful music and poetry! My favorite phrase is "mi fartas bone" because it sounds like a frenchman saying fart ass boner, forgive me for having the humor of a child!
