I hadn't really actively engaged with Reddit in years, and I stopped lurking almost cold turkey when they killed off the personal homepage on the mobile web interface earlier this year. I deleted my account when the Apollo news broke (I've never even used a third-party app, but it's crystal-clear what direction the wind is blowing). I only found out about lemmy after I pulled the plug.

Now to figure out how mastodon and all the other "fediverse" apps work :-)

I did a week ago, before all this went down. Just kept having terrible experiences interacting with people. After 15 years on reddit I was done with it. Deleted my account immediately. Then followed by regret for not backing up my saved section or removing my old comments. :(

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I just deleted mine. I figured if I can't really remember what I had saved, then I probably don't really need any of that stuff anyways.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I just deleted my u/truejeta account, which was almost 5 years old. Still don't know if I'm gonna miss Reddit, but we'll see. Anyway Lemmy looks very promising, so I'm happy to be here

After six or seven years on Reddit, I finally deleted it and have removed it from my bookmarks. It's a little unusual trying to find communities for certain things I only used Reddit for, but I like it nonetheless.

Already deleted all content a couple of years ago and was just lurking. Did notice that it became a chore, especially when boys became prevalent. Forced closure of 3rd party apps was the straw that broke this camels back. It’s a shame because it’s been roughly ten years or so and Reddit truly devolved

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I don’t think I’m going to delete, but I don’t think I will engage.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I've already deleted my reddit account a few days ago, never gonna use reddit for the foreseeable future.

Deleted my 14 year old account yesterday. Didn't save shit. Fuck that place.

I have not deleted it yet in hopes that they will roll back / cancel the api changes. I will not be using it until they do however. Lemmy seems like a really wholesome place so far.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I did today. My account was about 5.5 years old and I have to admit it was somewhat hard at the beginning. But to be honest I already don’t care anymore.

That API stuff was a huge shitshow that made me really angry. I even would have paid a subscription to be able to keep using Apollo. But if Reddit decides to bring people out of business they are not going to do business with me either.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I’ll be deleting my 10+ year account once Apollo dies. May lurk in a few communities for a bit until there’s something similar here.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Fully deleted. Never going back. To be honest, I was looking for a reason to get off. Glad it’s done.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (7 children)

I have. And i would love for it to be permanent, but that's going to depend on if Lemmy continues to build content. At the end of the day, I like this platform but without content I won't stay. Current momentum is looking fantastic though, and I will continue to comment and add my pieces!

I didn't delete my account, but my local community and I have switched to Discord and Lemmy. I think I'm now spending more time on these two services than on Reddit.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I don't plan on deleting my reddit accounts to be honest, I put way too much work in them, plus they have some saved posts that I really need and use as a reference from time to time. Also, there are some communities there that I don't believe will shift over here (for some, I am sure they won't, since they're other not that big amd moderation is not a problem for them), so I'll mostly be using Lemmy and Reddit interchangeably.

I've deleted all the posts in my 12 year account but I find it hard to nuke the whole account.

They sure aren't going to make any more money off of me though.

UPDATE: I pulled the plug

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I've deleted my comments and posts and find Reddit then restored them a few hours later.

So I've written some Python to delete them automatically and have it run on a schedule. Fuck 'em. A week later and Reddit are still restoring my data for the script to delete.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I think i'll nuke mine after the AMA. Just one more hour!

Edit: its gone

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

🫡 may your future be bright and the wind at your back!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I yeeted my account today. I've used reddit for ~10 years now. It's sad about some niche communities and inside-jokes, but if people keep using lemmy i'm sure they will find their way here eventually.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I haven't yet, I'm still a moderator and it will be hard to leave reddit EDIT: Spelling

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I've begun the process, requested my data from them and then afterwards i'll be nuking my account

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I deleted my throwaways weeks ago, but I deleted my main account earlier today. I lurked more than I posted which I guess means I don't have a lot of the history a lot of others have with their account but I posted every so often and had the account for years.

Even so, reddit has made it a place I don't want to be, I want them to know that (by falling user numbers) and I also worry reddit will make it more difficult in the future to get rid of your account.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I was a reddit user for about 15 years. Deleted my account and post history yesterday — honestly haven’t missed it as much as I thought I would 🤷‍♂️

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I deleted my accounts earlier this week (before the AMA). I decided I could just make a new one in the future if that ever was a thing, and I’d rather not contribute to their line charts of “active users”, and rather would appear on those for “accounts deleted in the last 30 days”.

For me it was a symbolic reminder that I don’t want to lurk there and deleting my account was an action I remember. I hope they follow the direction of Twitter and Instagram by making the platform unusable without an account, further cementing more barriers for me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I abandon my Reddit account every month or so and start over

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I might delete it when Boost kicks it at the end of the month, we'll see.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I have to be 100% honest, probably won't delete it

Though come the 12th I'll be uninstalling Relay and hopefully make something of Lemmy
