Rule 196 is what I'm assuming you're talking about. It was a subreddit that gained popularity due to only having one rule, which is to post before leaving. The sub started after it's predecessor, r/195, was shut down by the moderators

And worth pointing out that Lemmy has a c/195 and a c/196.
I blocked both of them because I just don't want to see that many memes and /new was full of posts in those two communities. But clearly a lot of people are enjoying those.
Haha I'm having great fun over there but I can definitely see why you wouldn't want your feed full of that nonsense.
And I love both of you!
I blocked them this morning. Didnβt want to but it was overwhelming.
Good thinking.
Thank you for this idea! Iβve been here like 24 hours and Iβm already annoyed with them.
Ok. But what was r/195?
I saw someone else respond to this on an earlier thread that it was the dorm room number of the person who created it. The sub closed down and someone created a new one as 196. The rule has always been the same.
And why did it shut down and have to be replaced by r/196 ?
Reusing a comment i made a few days ago, "It's based off r/195, which was a sub where the main rule was that you had to make 1 post before leaving, that sub closed down a few years ago, then r/196 was made to replace it. IIRC r/195 was originally for some peoples apartment, with the name just being their apartment number. Eventually other people joined in because of the rule and it snowballed from there."
To add onto that, r/195 shut down because the mods didn't feel like running it anymore as it became to much to handle.
The shut down was a bit more cryptic, after almost ten years they just said the "experiment is over" and shut down lol
Oh, just found this write-up from the original creator, apparently people just suck: https://i.redd.it/lgpet1ydu2v71.png
it's the whole gimmick of a meme community called 196 where if you visit it, the one rule it has is that you have to post something before you leave
Oh no, i broke the one rule.
You had one job!
It's funny, I never saw 196 on reddit but it really makes an impact in this part of the fediverse!
fr they're delivering the memes
ikr, their meme game is on point.
To an outsider it's basically just a meme sub, but almost all the post titles contain (or are just simply) the word "Rule".
Thanks for asking OP, I had no idea either.
I know on Tumblr it means 'if you laugh you have to reblog', but judging from the posts on here I didn't think it was the same
Lol it's so funny to read the comments about people being annoyed by 195 and 196. It's just old guys complaining that they don't get the joke lol.
It's annoying AF, much like the habit of people posting comments consisting of "Based" all over the place in recent times. The latter is dying down fortunately, and I hope the R meme meets a quick and painful death very soon.
It's not really a meme. It's from c/196, where the main rule is that you have to post something before you leave, hence why everything is named rule. If you block [email protected] and [email protected] that should deal with almost all of the rule posts.
The block feature is your friend. Use it liberally and donβt feel bad about it.
Seriously, if everyone blocked communities they disagree with or arenβt interested in instead of resorting to the old toxic behaviors that would be a huge improvement.
they are only posting the "rule posts" in 196 communities, mostly centered around lemmy.blahaj.zone, but there's a couple of other splinter subs. If you just avoid 196 you wont see it.
