Microsoft has fired two employees who organized an unauthorized vigil at the company’s headquarters for Palestinians killed in Gaza during Israel’s war with Hamas. Both workers were members of a coalition of employees called “No Azure for Apartheid” that has opposed Microsoft’s sale of its cloud-computing technology to the Israeli government.

But they contended that Thursday’s event was similar to other Microsoft-sanctioned employee giving campaigns for people in need. Mohamed, who is from Egypt, said he now needs a new job in the next two months to transfer a work visa and avoid deportation.

Google earlier this year fired more than 50 workers in the aftermath of protests over technology the company is supplying the Israeli government amid the Gaza war. The firings stemmed from internal turmoil and sit-in protests at Google offices centered on “Project Nimbus,” a $1.2 billion contract signed in 2021 for Google and Amazon to provide the Israeli government with cloud computing and artificial intelligence services.

This is a major release with focus on improving developer experience and multi threading support.

Most notable changes:

  • Dropped 'lua lifetime (Lua and subtypes are now 'static)
  • Send + Sync with send feature flag
  • Function traits to wrap Rust functions with arbitrary number of arguments
  • Low level Lua C API support through Lua::exec_raw

See full CHANGELOG

The new version is even faster than v0.9, see our benchmarks.

Hey r/rust 👋

I’m excited to share Fennec, a new PHP toolchain inspired by Rust's tooling and philosophies. Fennec brings the robustness and developer-centric design of the Rust ecosystem to PHP, with features like linting, formatting, and static analysis.

After a couple of months of development, I’m open-sourcing Fennec. It’s super early, and all it can do right now is basic linting with only a few lint plugins and rules implemented. It’ll take a long time for it to take full shape, but you can try and test it now. The long-term goal is for Fennec to become a complete toolchain that modernizes PHP tooling.

I’d love any feedback on the project. Check out the code here: github.com/carthage-software/fennec

Thanks for your thoughts and ideas as I work to bring Rust-inspired tools to PHP!

I want to implement image manipulation and transformation like in Photoshop. (I'm not making Photoshop alternative, just some features like that 🥴)

I'm thinking of using wgpu for the intense image processing functions, but not sure how I should implement the image rendering.

For example, in GIMP, if you try to resize an image by dragging, it's really laggy, and there exists large latency between dragging and the actual drawing of the transformed image, though I don't know the reason behind it.

Would it possible to achieve the fast image rendering and manipulation using egui? How should I implement it? Or, would it be more plausible to deal with wgpu directly?

Original Title: TIL in July 1969, US Senator Ted Kennedy crashed his car into the sea after a party and left the scene, leaving Mary Jo Kopechne to drown, a young woman that could have been saved if help had been called that night.

It’s well past the August holiday peak, but anger against over-tourism in Spain is spilling into the off-season, as holiday-makers continue to seek winter sun.

On Sunday locals in the Basque city of San Sebastian plan to take to the streets under the banner: “We are in danger; degrow tourism!”

And in November anti-tourism protesters will gather in Seville.

Thousands turned out last Sunday in the Canary Islands, so the problem is clearly not going away.
