Sometimes, developing a new app, platform, or concept for the #Fediverse can seem like a minefield. Here's some rules of thumb on how to maintain goodwill with the community, and ideas of how to do it.

In an effort to better help prospective Fediverse developers understand Solid, the ActivityPods team has released an example app as a reference point for understanding how everything works under the hood.

And now, for some lighthearted fun: Canvas, the r/Place alternative for Lemmy, is back for its 72-hour collaborative art event, and this time, the whole Fediverse is invited!

Is there any real or serious conversation or work around the idea of a feature-full social media browser?

Basically something like a web browser but for “all the social media” along with useful organisation features too.

For locked down big social APIs, this makes less sense nowadays, but for open alt-social systems, *it is likely the most valuable promise of such systems* that they can become like the web, reachable through an awesome all-in-one app.

A thought on "moderation bubbles"

A plurality of contentiously incompatible but independent moderation "spaces" ... is the only way in which the internet is good at digesting substantial and contentious topics.

* conversations on the internet generally suck.
* On any contentious front, strong moderation can run the risk of "echo chambers".
* For those willing to survey multiple "bubbles", an interconnected plurality provides a de facto dialectics.

Thus federation for the win!

I think this is a good incentive for Journalists to be more active on the fediverse.

Following #lemmy communities from #mastodon has gotten much better

Version 19.4 introduced automatic hashtag-ing (see https://lemmy.ml/post/16585416)

Posts get federated with a hashtag matching the community name.

The important bit is that comments to posts *don't* get the tags.

Which means you can follow the corresponding tag on mastodon and get a feed only of posts.

EG: #asklemmy

If you're starting a community, giving it a unique enough name could help prevent overlap too.

I left reddit on june 12th last year in protest of spez's decision to change the reddit api from being free as in free beer to an unbelievably expensive cost. That same day, I joined lemmy on a now abandoned account.

At first, I had a hard time adapting to lemmy's significantly smaller community, but I got used to it and learned to embrace it. However, recently I started missing reddit a lot more, and after some consideration, made an account on the (demonic) website.

But I don't think it felt the same way as before, sure, there was more posts, but they lacked a heart and soul, they were all so generic, as if it lost it's spark.

Has anyone else that's been on there noticed anything similar??

Hello, Hatsu is a self-hosted Fediverse bridge for static websites.

I recently released version 0.2 with the following features:

Improved RSS compatibility

RSS compatibility was terrible at 0.1.x due to some bugs - should now work with most valid Atom / RSS feeds.

Receive likes & reposts

Hatsu now receives likes and retweets for local posts and outputs them via a mastodon-compatible API.

New comment component

KKna is a new comment component (also written by me) that has Hatsu preset that automatically infer URL.

Nix Package

Are you using NixOS / Nix? I am, so I packaged it into NUR and Nixpkgs.

There is no documentation on this at the moment, I will update it later.

TLDR: The main reason was Lemmy hogging server resources.

Last year, during the Reddit 2023 API controversy I finally deleted my account and moved on to Lemmy. Here’s a look at my experiences and why I eventually decided to switch to PieFed.

Maven, a new social network backed by OpenAI's Sam Altman, found itself in a controversy today when it imported a huge amount of posts and profiles from the Fediverse, and then ran AI analysis to alter the content.

I am looking to host a fediverse platform for a community of non-tech people. These people use mostly ig and some still fb. These people are from a network of schools which are ideologically aligned with libre software and decentralisation. It will include adults and also teenagers, who mostly use IG. This is part of a plan of a massive migration to ethical platforms. I am trying to choose the fittest fediverse solution to these, also considering that I am not sure how much my home server will be capable of sustaining, so the platform should ideally be as lightweight as possible. I am considering mastodon, pixelfed, misskey and sharkey, and some people have suggested akkoma.

What would you recommend? Thanks!!

IFTAS, the Trust and Safety organization for the #Fediverse, launched a new community portal full of guides, resources, discussion groups, and tools for community moderators and instance admins. We take a look at what it does.

Seeing more "cake days" pop up lately, it seems we're approaching (or in) the 1 yr anniversary of the Reddit migration.

It's kinda sweet actually that we all get this reminder of it with the pickup in "cakedays".

It reminds of my seeing the wave happen. I was on lemmy before the migration (not a flex, I joined mastodon in the twitter migration and explored the other fediverse platforms around looking for a reddit/forum alternative) ... and followed a bunch of communities over on my mastodon account. Early last year many of these communities were fairly quiet (or at least quieter than now) and so I didn't really see any of them in my mastodon feed. I'd actually forgotten that I'd followed them. I'd heard word about the API stuff over on Reddit, but I knew something was happening when I started seeing more and more posts in my masto feed that confused me ... it wasn't clear where they were coming from. Double checking I'd see that they came from lemmy communities I'd forgotten about ... and I realised I was seeing lemmy literally come alive!

All these cakedays are kinda the same thing ... a sort of internet equivalent of a weather event or season.

Just trying to check and make sure I never missed any. Is it just writefreely and plume right now?
