Wanna know how the numbers change for "Other Humans" when deaths due to car collisions are included? It gets 1.35 million added to it, and those were 2016 numbers.

Automobile drivers are by far the most deadly animal, blowing mosquitoes completely out of the water!

Drunken driver who snapped photo going 141 mph before deadly collision imprisoned for 17 years

Darryl Anderson was drunk behind the wheel of his Audi SUV, had his accelerator pressed to the floor and was barreling toward a car ahead of him when he snapped a photo of his speedometer. The picture showed a car in the foreground, a collision warning light on his dashboard and a speed of 141 mph (227 kph).

An instant later, he slammed into the car in the photo. The driver, Shalorna Warner, was not seriously injured but her 8-month-old son and her sister were killed instantly, authorities said. Evidence showed Anderson never braked. 

Anderson, 38, was sentenced Tuesday to 17 years in prison for the May 31 crash in northern England that killed little Zackary Blades and Karlene Warner. Anderson pleaded guilty last week in Durham Crown Court to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

For seven years now, the city of nearly 60,000 people has reported resounding success: Not a single automobile occupant, bicyclist or pedestrian has died in a traffic crash since January 2017, elevating Hoboken as a national model for roadway safety.

While Hoboken’s plan has numerous components, including lower speed limits and staggered traffic lights, daylighting is often credited as one of the biggest reasons its fatalities have dropped to zero.

Ryan Sharp, the city’s transportation director, said when roads need to be repaved, Hoboken takes the additional step of cordoning off the street corners to widen curbs and shorten crosswalks. It’s already illegal to park at an intersection in Hoboken, but drivers often do anyway if there aren’t physical barriers.

Edinburgh's banned pavement parking scheme commenced at the end of January 2024, issuing fines of £100 for vehicles not complying. In total, 2,313 tickets have been issued to offenders in the first three months up until the end of April.

However, the City Council are seeing the ban as a success case - the number of tickets issued per month has dropped from 925 tickets in March to 644 tickets in April. Complaints on pavement parking, double parking and parking at dropped crossings have also almost halved, from a peak of 1,316 in February to 687 in April.

The pavement parking ban was introduced to keep pavements free of obstacles, mainly for people with reduced mobility, such as wheelchair users, or people with buggies or prams. Prior to the start of the ban, 556 "red" streets were marked by the council as having problems with pavement parking. After the first three months of enforcing the ban, this figure was down to just 7 streets. These streets continue to see problems such as cars parking on the road, leaving too little space for bin lorries to pass by. Edinburgh Council is considering measures such as yellow lines on the pavement to safeguard sufficient space for bin lorries and emergency vehicles to pass by parked cars.

Councillor Scott Arthur, Convener of the Transport and Environment Committee, stated: “The number of complaints is starting to fall because compliance is quite high. Things are starting to normalise. I'm proud of how the council officers have implemented this ban, but even prouder of how the public in Edinburgh have responded to it. It really has been transformative in a lot of areas, making it a safer and more equal city.”

My original question was "How do we disincentivize the purchase of pickup trucks/SUVs" but then I thought it would be better to approach the larger problem of car dependency and car ownership. One option is, of course, to create public transit infrastructure and improve it where it already exist. This, however, doesn't change the fact that some will still choose to drive. What would be the best ways to discourage people from owning personal cars?

Progress: the Katy Freeway in Houston, Texas, spans across 26 lanes making it the worlds widest. The freeway is broken down in to 12 main lanes (six in each direction), eight feeder lanes.

Kia Ray is a compact car, currently only available in South Korea. It's tiny yet can carry a lot so a lot of small businesses have these as a van alternative.

I hate cars. But getting rid of them has a long way ahead and I think this kind of small-but-big kind of car can appeal general public and make cities better.

It feels terrible to know that we have no say now and within just a few years we won't have a say ever again. At least none of us alive today. Hopefully our kid's kids will eliminate the car.
