Currently there is a bug where new posts show up at the top of the feed when browsing under any sorting method. According to this github issue its been fixed in a recent release. Could lemmy.world be upgraded to this version?

I think this feature will help keep communities alive if something goes wrong. I hope Lemmy implements this feature.

Been using this one for over a decade. Works with Firefox's bookmark keywords feature.

Make a new bookmark, set the link as follows:

https://lemmy.world/c/%s (or your own Lemmy instance)

And in the "Keyword" field, use "c" or "lemmy" or whatever.

Now, when you want to visit a specific Lemmy community on your home instance, you can simply type:

"c community_name" in the address bar, or "lemmy community_name" in Firefox and it will automatically open the community.

Without changing something global in my browser settings?

Hey there! I've started a new machine learning community and it's ready for fresh voices and perspectives! Right now, it's just me and a couple of posts, but I'm excited to see where we can take this with your input. All experience levels are welcome. Whether you want to discuss the latest in ML, ask questions, or simply learn, this is the place. Come, be among the first contributors and let's shape this community together!

A well known feature from Reddit, default communities (subs on Reddit) are communities that newcomers are subscribed to by default. Lemmy, and specifically lemmy.world, could use some of these, I feel. At the very least, communities like lemmyworld, general, and newcomers are good ones to include, if we're still somehow sticking with the old Lemmy ethos of less guided interaction. Aww, pics, videos, memes, news, etc, are good ones if not. This massively sped up the integration of new users on Reddit, and I believe it's a good addition to Lemmy.

Added on to this is a capability that Reddit had and lemmy doesn't yet, which is multi(reddits) communities, or Collections is probably what we'd call them here. I could see a 'default' collection being applied to new users, for example. The pie in the sky version of this would be publicly browsable and shareable collections, so you could send your friends a link which allows them to subscribe to multiple communities at once and create a new personal Collection automatically based on it.

It probably goes against the philosophy or whatever of FOSS or Lemmy itself, but why not be a little evil so that you can actually sustain yourself? Donations can bring us far, but small non-intrusive ads can be a bliss in the skies for the people actually hosting the instance. Especially if there are millions of users uploading thousands of images and videos. This is extremely expensive.

Is running ads really that taboo?

EDIT: some people seem not to get the point of "millions of users", which presumably includes non-techies that do not use adblockers. I mean that without ads (or mining?), no instance would be able to scale to the point where it can compete with Reddit for example. If you were to want that.

A couple of Tories visited the BBC. One said, "Nice BBC you've got here. Shame if something were to happen to it." Meanwhile, the other one casually knocked a programme off the shelf and said, "Oops," when it smashed to pieces on the floor.

Strictly speaking, this scenario is unnecessary, since the BBC is run by Tory stooges. They're quite capable of censoring any investigation likely to embarrass their lords and masters.

So glad the ethics of Lemmy chime with me. I do think the developers deserve a little help so if you can https://join-lemmy.org/donate

How do I hide posts/submissions on Kbin?

113

Does anybody know why anytime I go to make a post in a community on Lemmy World the “Post” button just spins indefinitely and nothing ends up happening. I haven’t been able to post in a few days.

I'm trying to subscribe to some kbin communities, such as https://kbin.social/m/archlinux

I'm using the URL: https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected]

I'm pretty sure that's correct, but it's just telling me "can't find community", am I doing something wrong?

EDIT: Solved, thank you @[email protected]!

  1. Go to search and search the URL of the community you want to join.
  2. Wait a few seconds.
  3. Still not there? Click search again.
  4. Still not there? Refresh and search one more time.
  5. Still not there? Contact your instance admins!

I think it's already widely known that the developers of the Lemmy software hold questionable/extreme ideas, which they don't hide. ~~I think it is not good to give them money or extra publicity, since that could drive away new users when they find out. Also money better not go into extremist hands.~~

~~I think there should instead be a donation link to help the instance maintainers and moderators.~~

Ideally however, it would be best if instance owners joined hands and forked Lemmy under a totally new branding and used that on their servers instead, in order to completely disassociate from Lemmy the software and its developers.

EDIT: You all have good points. On second thought, maybe you're right: it would not be decent to not donate them for their work. However I'm still not happy that genocide-deniers get this publicity :(

EDIT2: Just so that you don't think I'm making this up, please see this well-researched list of sources from the user spirit.

... you've made the right choice! Stay with us and let's contribute to make it a wonderful place :)

(hopefully soon with better "hide read post" features, i.e. on scrolling past a post :winkwinkJerboa:).

Cat pic unrelated but ain't she beautiful?

Edit : I'd understand if this post is deleted since it's not strictly about lemmy.world, but I really didn't know where to post it!

Im a bit confused. In a post (made on lemmy.ml) I replied to a comment (from someone on fmhy.ml) and my comment is not showing on sh.itjust.works. I am registered on lemmy.world As far as I understand these instances are connected. Is it taking a long time to aggregate ? Does it have anything to do with language selection? I have undetermined, greek and english selected. Here is the post but it is in greek so it may be a bit confusing.

I'm not sure how authentication works for Lemmy, but you could just grab de new post form and send it to Lemmy, to an existing community or creating on with the same subreddit name

In other words, redifining its predominant use not as a username but something more spine the lines of smeg, etc. I'm all for not driving traffic to the site, and this is both helpful and entertaining. If Dan Savage and his audience can do it to a rectal fungal infection of an excuse for a politician, we can make this happen no sweat.

When I first open up lemmy.world in the browser, I am not logged in, and at top right it says Login. I type my username and password and hit enter. I get the hourglass for a few seconds, then for a split second the word Login is replaced by another word, before displaying my username (wazoobonkerbrain).

I did a screencast (recording) so that I could slow it down enough to see what the other word is and it is "calaei". The screencast is in webm format and I can share it if you want, I don't see a way to post it here.

124

I might have missed it somewhere, but is it possible to hide posts here. I like to hide popular posts once I am done seeing or engaging with them.

With the lower traffic here, I think this would especially help with finding new content.

Wow, since my post yesterday, lemmy.world has added 2000+ new users to cross the 30000 user mark! Just think, it was only at 20k three days ago. Crazy growth.

With that, lemmy.world is the clear second largest lemmy instance and has left the third largest instance beehaw.org’s 12k in the dust. It’s now within 6000 users to overtake the #1 spot from lemmy.ml (their registration is closed). Exciting to see this growth!

What are some of your favorite communities on lemmy.world so far?
