Introduction

So I was bored and decided to check the performance of Counter-Strike 2 between Windows and Linux (Nobara). Software

Specifications

Hardware

  • 5800X3D
  • 6800 XT
  • 4x8GB DDR4 3600 CL18

Software

  • Nobara 40 GNOME w/ MESA 24.1.6
  • Microsoft Windows 11 Pro Build 22631 w/ AMD Adrenaline AFMF2 Preview Driver (24.20.01.02)

Benchmark

Test 1 - Workshop FPS benchmark

Ran THIS benchmark map on both OSes.

Results:

Test 2 - Inferno Wingman

Comparison

Final words

To be honest I am just bored and wanted to test out the performance between the two OSes. I notice on Linux that whenever I am in a gunfight that the mouse input slows down, feels like I am moving the mouse through mud or something. That might not be apparant from the numbers alone but it is really weird and makes it almost impossible for me to micro-adjust the aim during a fight :(. We can conclude that CS2 indeed runs pretty well on Linux (except the weird mouse input slowdown during fights), but I am not smart enough to analyze the results any further. But I hope that someone somewhere may find these numbers interesting.

A while ago, i got into modding some of my games, like Skyrim and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. For some games, like KOTOR, i started off without using any mod manager, for others, like Skyrim, i used Vortex. Both approaches had issues: Not using a mod manager is a pain when you want to remove a mod or when mod authors assume file names are always case insensitive. Vortex solved some of these issues, but was fiddly to get running, even with recent Proton versions, and doesn't support installing mods like SKSE.

To solve this, i developed my own Linux native mod manager, Limo. The goal was to support modding any game where modding consists of simply replacing files, as well as Bethesda games like Skyrim through LOOT. I've used Limo myself for a while now for multiple games, including adding >1300 mods to Skyrim, and decided to publish it. I hope someone else will find it useful :)

Here is a list of features:

  • Multiple target directories per application
  • Automatic adaptation of mod file names to prevent issues with case mismatches
  • Auto-Tagging system for filtering
  • FOMOD support
  • Simple backup system
  • LOOT integration
  • NexusMods API support

You can get Limo either as a flatpak or by building from sources found on GitHub. The wiki showcases an example setup for Skyrim.

If you find any bugs or have any ideas for features, please let me know by opening an issue on the GitHub page.

Note: All screenshots where taken with the KDE Breeze Dark theme, so the application may look a bit different for you if you are using another theme.

First of all thx for reading, now i can start :)

Hello again! I’m the creator of . The idea behind this project is to help users with older GPUs that support Vulkan, but do not support Vulkan 1.3, giving them a plug and play option, instead of manually overwriting the DXVK files in Proton. Also personal patches are included to make it even better :P.

So going on with the idea, i would love to make a list of GPUs that should use this older version of DXVK (1.10.3). If you could help by providing the names of dedicated or integrated GPUs that need that, it would be greatly appreciated! For now, i know about the GT 710 and the GTX 765m.

Anyone who contributes to this list will be acknowledged in the Credits section. If you prefer to remain anonymous, just let me know in your comment and I’ll make sure to respect your privacy.

And again, Thank you! :P

Welcome to the newbie advice thread!

If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?” — this is where to ask them.

Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

hey, i'm new to the whole Linux scene and was a wondering if AMD cards are really that good on Linux compared to Nvidia?

i am planning to switch to AMD in the next couple of years even if i kept using Windows, and lately after i played around on linux i thought i might fully switch to Linux if/when i go team Red.

i know it has something to do with Nvidia proprietary drivers and them being not interested in supporting Linux, but as i understand not all of AMD features are open as well so i don't get this at all.

I remember when I first started trying to game on Linux. Ubuntu 14. We only had wine as an option. You'd need to install steam in wine, and then hope that it was stable enough to install and run your games. You could play World of Warcraft pretty consistently, and maybe a few smaller games, but not much else without a LOT of tinkering. You'd be lucky if your wireless card was working consistently, let alone any games.

Fast forward a couple of years ago. 2020. Proton and DXVK are out, but it tends to lag behind new releases. Cyberpunk 2077 had significant problems at launch -- especially if you were on NVIDIA cards -- and took weeks to sort out. Ray Tracing and DLSS were basically out of the question, and your experience was pretty questionable unless you were on AMD. Your monitors were fixed to the lowest refresh rate among them because of limitations in X11.

Today, August 20th 2024, every single brand new game that has released this year has worked for me on launch day with zero issues. It didnt matter if it was on Epic, Steam, GoG, etc. Everything just WORKED. We have the Heroic Launcher, Lutris has gotten really good, basically every steam game just works out of the box with the exception of a few games with anticheat and developers with anticompetitive policies that refuse to enable anti-cheat proton support. We have a variety of branched versions of proton with specific fixes and enhancements for various games. We have a new display server protocol that is (quite recently) stable on all major GPU manufacturers. Black Myth Wukong launched today, and it's already gold on protondb. Even games that Steam doesn't supposedly support directly are getting patches to proton to ensure the experience is seamless.

And in the future, support is looking even better! HDR support has come to wayland -- if only experimentally -- and while it's not very good, it will get better once they have greater support for color profiles...And not only that, Linux ARM gaming support is starting to take off and get better (though my experience in that regard is limited).

Linux still has a lot of limitations for business users as far as available software goes, but when it comes to gaming, we have an experience that is basically on-par with Windows and universally better than Mac.

Man is it a good time to try Linux.

We got the surprise drop today of the FFXVI Steam page which also includes already a demo and from my testing is working really good!

I am using Bazzite 40 w/a 5600x CPU and a 6800xt GPU and at 4K (with FSR) it goes around 60 FPS with everything on high (except shadows which defaults to medium on High settings).

Approximately for me FSR quality is around 55 FPS, Balance is 66, Performance is 85, Ultra Performance is around 100 FPS.

It has FSR 3 with Frame Gen as an extra option, XeSS 1.3, Legacy FSR 1 if for some reason you want that, and Dynamic Resolution.

Frame Gen I think it works, I definitively can see the artifacts of Frame Gen, but I don't feel it more smooth (?), not sure how it works on Linux, never got the chance to test it on Windows either, but either way the gains with FSR are good that I personally would not turn that on.

Out of the box it initially gives a "no compatible GPU error" window, but just clicking ok loads the game with no issue and the GPU is actually detected all-right in game.

It also has HDR support so I used the following argument to enable HDR (KDE 6.1):

DXVK_HDR=1 gamescope -f -w 3840 -h 2160 -r 120 --hdr-enabled -- env MANGOHUD=1 %command%

**Quick update

It seems like some people are experiencing some heavy glitches with some black bars across the screen, I personally saw a really small affectation on the Dragoon fight, I reloaded the last checkpoint and the glitch didn't show up any more, so hopefully a quick reload can help!

Also the cutscenes are locked at 30fps and for a game with 20+ hours of cutscenes...thats...not great but thats besides linux but yeah.

Screenshot I took, in-game photo-mode

Quick Context: I have a 3900x CPU and an RTX 2070 GPU, and I'm using an Arch-derivative distro called ArcoLinux, and X11.

All the games I play (except Minecraft) are from Steam and are all compatible according to ProtonDB.

However, before dishing out money, I'd like to know first if transitioning from 1080p 60Hz to 1440p 180Hz would be as smooth on Linux and would like to know if there are any tips or things I should do after buying one.

Thanks!
