Hi everyone,

Having successfully left windows for Linux (Fedora) a few years ago, I thought I’d the same for my phone.

I have a professional iPhone 13 provided by my employer, but I have an old Samsung GT-I8730 lying around.

Sadly, there is apparently nothing (except stock Android) that I could easily install on it.

So I’m kind of looking for a cheap second hand phone that I could get for my birthday in order to try to have a degoogled and deappleified private phone (I’m now using my work iPhone for everything).

What phone should I buy for max 150.- (around 180$) second hand?

Also what OS should I try to install on it?

To be honest, I’m really a rookie in the phone world and I’m not even sure if I’m looking for a degoogled Android phone (/e/os, lineage, graphene) or a linux phone (Ubuntu touch, KDE mobile).

It would be important for me to be able to daily drive the phone. Listening to music and using my banking apps on it would be important features.

So I’m looking for advice regarding all of this and I’m thankful in advance for your help.

Let’s have 8 competitors instead of 2

I recently got my first Ubuntu touch device and I have an issue where it randomly powers off. How can I diagnose this issue?

“Marius showed videos of both voLTE and 5g running on UT devices during Q&A 138. A big step forward but not fully resolved yet. We are now using the proprietary Sailfish ofono binder pluging for voLTE and more work and testing is needed. Of the two by way of a sort of happy accident 5g should be available first, and has been tested on FP5 and 4 but should in theory work on Android 9 and above devices. Both of the videos show these running on qualcomm but thanks to Nikita they are also on meditek.

This has been a long journey with many false paths but things are really close now.

We will obviously keep you all updated on progress and testing opportunities as they arise.and become available. Marius should be putting instructions on how to install the 5G ppa on the forum before everything is merged upstream for those who wish to give it a try.”

Finally! This is a massive barrier that will be knocked down for the community. Expect to see more layman interest in the project soon. I personally want VoLTE the most as I have a pixel 3.

Battery Input Manager (gitlab.gnome.org)

Battery Input Manager is a DBus service managing charging input on your phone.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/gnumdk/battery-input-manager

It is able to set a start and end input threshold. It will charge until a max input threshold if an alarm is detected.

GNOME Clocks >= 45 is supported (flatpak or not).

If your phone looks unsupported, please look at https://gitlab.gnome.org/gnumdk/battery-input-manager/-/blob/main/data/devices.json and send me a merge request to add support for it.

Long time iOS user with perception issues here. I went to iOS because it was very simple and intuitive to use. My daily life was too busy for me to tinker with my phone a lot.

Now I'm using pmos with phosh and I'm mostly loving it. But some of the linux specific decisions and directions it takes dont really work with me.

Thats why I started asking myself if a DE exists which is basically a clone of the proprietary apple phone OS. It should obviously still be FOSS and prioritize FOSS apps and so on. But I think it would help adoption by mainstream if iOS users (especially with need for accessibility features). Its basically the reason I was able to switch from minecraft to mineclone. It's basically the same (although I respect their decision to rename to Voxelibre, iirc and go their own way).

I know this is probably going to get a lot of hate because iOS bad and tinkering good and so on. But accessibility is important for many people, especially in their busy lives.

Feel free to point me in the right direction if something like this exists or lets try and make something.

Thanks for reading and have a good one.

No billionaire shenanigans to get in the way of having a truly open-sourced phone.

Bevy on PinePhone Pro (files.mastodon.social)

Bevy can run on Android phones. But what about GNU/Linux phones?
I decided to find out using my PinePhone Pro with RK3399.

Managed to run my game using WGPU_SETTINGS_PRIO=webgl2. But couldn't get past the main menu due to limited features of the GPU. 😢

But simple 2D games like breakout example runs!

Right now I working on networking for the game, but this evening I decided to tinker with my device a little.

Finally a #convergence solution to my likings and needs. A pocketable machine that runs the OS I want ( #iusearchbtw ), looks how I want ( #sway #waybar #sxmo ), and does what I need (Citrix for work, Spotify on the web, and phone things).

Hi everyone!

I have to use an iPhone for work but I have an old Samsung GT-I8730 lying around.

It’s a really old phone but it seems to work well on its base Android OS, so I would want to experiment a bit with it.

I have experience with Linux distributions on my computers, but I’ve never installed an alternative OS. That’s why I’m looking for advices on what I could install on such an old piece of hardware.

I’ve always been interested in /e/os as I think it would still allow me to use my (swiss) banking apps, but I’d be interested in any distribution which might also make it possible.

If no OS would make such a thing possible, I would just want to know what I could install on this device to experience a bit.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I was thinking of getting one of these as a cheap replacement for my broken (and disappointing) Pinephone Pro.

What's the experience like?
