Disney Lorcana returns for its fifth set with the release of Shimmering Skies, an expansion that builds upon previous sets by pumping up archetypes and dropping some powerful new cards in the middle of the meta.

D23 was this past weekend and we got to enter the Disney Lorcana Booth and talk to their incredible team about the hit Trading Card Game

Lorcana players picked up on the change quickly. When a set of Ruby Taffyta Muttonfudge cards were revealed during the Shimmering Skies Lorecast numbered 103, 114, and 117, fans immediately noticed that the cards were no longer numbered alphabetically. There was some hope that a new ordering system would reveal itself as more cards were spoiled, but now that we’ve seen the entire set, it’s clear that there’s no logical organization whatsoever. The set is still broken down by color and card type, but within those subcategories, it's a total free for all.

With the fifth set, Shimmering Skies, imminent, we're delighted to get a look at an as-yet-unseen secret Enchanted card from within. Without further ado, meet the Enchanted Clarabelle: Light on her Hooves!

Equipped with the Rush keyword ability, which allows Rafiki to challenge an opposing character in the same turn he’s played, in concert with an ability that gives him Challenger +4 in his first turn, Shaman Duelist can quite deftly remove a character with up to 5 Willpower from the board. His utility doesn’t end there either – with 4 Willpower of his own and 2 Lore he’s handy to have in play for a bit of questing after his big entrance.

The cards from the D23 Collections feature expanded artwork that reaches out to the edge of the cards, showing more of the scenery. It will feature a card from each of the first sex sets including:

Disney Lorcana fans have a new reason to visit their local hobby stores on August 9 and mass retailers on August 23, as the trading card game launches its fifth set, “Shimmering Skies.” This expansion introduces new characters, mechanics, and cards, enriching the gaming experience for both new and returning players.

Once again, it looks like the Disney Lorcana packing center has messed up and put some promo cards in its packs. This has created an even bigger incentive for collectors to rush to card shops and grab all of the Ursula's Return packs they can get their hands on.

According to the Discord statement, Disney told them: "Disney has intellectual property rights in the Disney Lorcana cards and that Disney has requested Pixelborn to respect these rights by not copying the cards in any way suggesting an affiliation with Disney."

Disney Lorcana's new decks lean heavily into cards that boost specific card classifications.

The Amber/Amethyst Ursula's Return deck is built primarily around the Madrigal family of Encanto fame.

Meanwhile, the Sapphire/Steel Ursula's Return deck leans heavily on the Hero classification, with several cards buffing up or taking advantage of Hero cards in play.

If you've not been keeping up with what is quickly becoming one of the best card games, Enchanted cards are by far the rarest in Disney Lorcana. They're alternate versions of standard cards with unique, borderless artwork that goes all in on the premium feel, and that makes them highly sought-after. Because there are so few of them, they can also go for an upsettingly high sum on reseller markets. Some have sold for tens of thousands of dollars, for example.

The first tournament prize card released for Disney Lorcana is selling for big bucks on secondary sites. Earlier this month, Disney Lorcana launched Set Championships for Into the Inklands, marking some of the first official tournaments for the new card game. The top four players in each in-store tournament receives a Stitch – Rock Star variant card, while the top two players receive a matching playmat.

Disney Lorcana will introduce a new twist to its Shift mechanic in Ursula's Return. The next expansion of the popular Disney-themed trading card game will feature Floodborn character cards with the ability to Shift without paying an Ink cost. Instead, players can Shift the card onto an existing character with the same name through "other means," including discarding specific kinds of cards from their hand.

Ursula’s Return will release at local game stores, Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, Disneyland Paris, and select Disney Store retail locations on May 17, 2024. It will then be available from mass market retailers on May 31, 2024.
