Welcome to the lemmy.world community for Portland, Oregon!

This community has kind of been empty since it was created, I'm hoping to change that!

Unlike "other" Portland communities you may have seen "elsewhere", I believe in a "warts and all" approach. You are free to take off your Rose tinted glasses and talk about topics that are dragging our city down.

At the same time, sunset pics, snowmageddon, traffic monster, cones, that's all welcome as well. Let's collectively keep Portland weird!

2024 is going to be an interesting year politically with all the changes to city government, I will attempt to tag political threads with a [Politics] tag and encourage users to do so as well.

Other than the lemmy.world restrictions on spam, copyrighted material, and adult material (USE that NSFW tag!), there's only one real way to get in trouble here:

  1. Don't attack other users.

It's OK to go after Teargas Ted, it's OK to say Rene Gonzales is a fascist, ACAB, BLM, whatever floats your boat (WEFYB).

It's NOT OK to attack or diminish another user. Feel free to disagree, you can point out the many ways you think they're wrong, just don't start throwing perjoratives AT OTHER USERS.

I seem to remember at the time everyone was saying "This doesn't sound like a good idea, let's see how that works out for you..."

Well...

"The deflection program—spearheaded by Chair Vega Pederson among other county leaders—would allow people caught using drugs to avoid arrest and possibly walk away without mandated treatment when House Bill 4002 goes into effect on Sept. 1."

So, back to where we were under 110... no punishment and no treatment. How did that work out again?

Not a bad location. Makes 3 empty lots actually usable, has good access from the freeway so shouldn't be slamming local access.

For those unaware... excessive heat makes the power lines for the MAX expand, which causes slack on the lines, which means trains can't go as fast and there are often power outages.

Make sure you give yourself extra time if you travel by MAX in extreme temperatures.

There are other problems with freezing temps too, ice on the wires and malfunctioning switches. So beware then too!

"The decision, first reported by KGW, comes as Portland officials vote on an agreement with Multnomah County on their partnership to reduce homelessness. Portland Commissioner Rene Gonzalez, who is running for mayor, has blasted the county for its policy on tarps and tents, arguing that their distribution harms the city’s “livability and the ability for small businesses to thrive.”"

"The new rules require people who are offered shelter to accept it or face penalties, and it directs homeless individuals that they must keep their camping area tidy if they can’t access shelter. The ordinance scales back the potential of a 30-day stint behind bars for violators to just seven days and emphasizes a preference to offer offenders diversion."
