Archiact, best known for developing Journey to Foundation and Doom 3: VR Edition, will close in two weeks. […]

Archiact's closure isn't the only notable VR studio we've seen shutting down recently. Following previous layoffs last year alongside Onward studio Downpour Interactive, Meta closed Ready At Dawn last week after acquiring the Lone Echo studio back in 2020. The move followed recent reports that its Reality Labs AR/VR division has been ordered to cut spending by 20%.

Now available on Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, and Vision Pro, Fly aims to bring the magic of exploring Google Earth in 3D in a fully immersive way. Beyond just being able to explore the globe to your heart’s content, Fly aims for a more immersive feel than its spiritual predecessor. While the original Google Earth VR essentially had you floating around as a disembodied camera, Fly is thematically built around the idea that players are piloting a drone that can take them anywhere.

“Fly is our idea of a personal flight simulator that lets you travel on ground, above cities, and across countries to explore places you’ve never seen. Our focus has been on a seamless experience with intuitive comfortable controls, smooth loading, and detailed rendering of Google Earth Tiles,” says Eric Malafeew, CTO and Co-Founder of VirZOOM, the studio behind the app.

Developed by The Outsiders, Metal: Hellsinger VR is being reimagined for virtual reality in collaboration with Lab42 Games, containing everything from the original game and "many" post-launch features. Previously featured in June's UploadVR Summer Showcase, a new trailer confirmed its launching on Quest next month, followed by Steam and PlayStation VR2 in October.

August 20 seems to only be the date for the China launch of Pico's next headset.

Last week Pico announced a product launch event for August 20, with social media posts strongly suggesting it being a new headset. But new social media posts today suggest this will only be the China launch event, with a launch elsewhere coming at a later date.

The post refers to the headset as Pico 4 Ultra, a name which was also seen recently in an image leaked on Chinese social media. But it's possible the headset might be named Pico 4S elsewhere. In March ByteDance trademarked "Pico 4S", and icons of ringless "4S" controllers were found in the Pico Connect PC VR streaming software.

Indie studio Wenkly has released the multiplayer shooter Astro Hunters VR for SteamVR. A Meta Quest version will also be released soon, probably before the end of this quarter. Wenkly Studio is offering a 10% discount on Steam for the release. The studio is asking for honest feedback in the form of reviews and comments. Questions can be sent directly to the developers via Discord.

Wenkly also published a first roadmap for Astro Hunters VR. A cross-play mode with Meta Quest, improvements based on community feedback and new weapon attachments will be added in September and October.

New missions and powerful bosses are planned for 2024 and 2025, which will drop epic weapons, augmentations and other items as rewards. Later, a second and third planet, improved enemy AI, and a botanical garden will follow. Other ideas include an armor system, improvements to the inventory system, and the implementation of fan ideas.

Released back in March, Medieval Dynasty New Settlement is an immersive sandbox RPG where you roam around managing everything needed to try and get your little settlement to thrive. It's also now been optimized for the Quest 3 thanks to this week's 1.4 patch, adding a wealth of visual enhancements and new performance modes across all supported Quest headsets.

There are a ton of VR games coming this year, although there are a few big names we’re really holding out hope for.

Many of them are targeting all major VR headsets (thankfully), with only one actual Quest 3 exclusive listed below. More importantly, they’re all slated to arrive in 2024. Check out the this year’s most anticipated VR games below: Aces of Thunder (PSVR 2, PC VR) Alien: Rogue Incursion (Quest 3, PSVR 2, PC VR) Batman: Arkham Shadow (Quest 3) Hitman 3 VR Reloaded (Quest 3) Metro Awakening (Quest, PSVR 2, PC VR) Skydance’s Behemoth (Quest, PSVR 2, PC VR) Zombie Army VR (Quest, PSVR 2, PC VR)

The release notes for the SteamVR 2.8.1.beta update originally stated that Steam Link would be getting support for hand tracking. However, this line was quickly removed, as reported by Brad Lynch via X. It is possible that the new feature was not fully ready yet.

PC VR games and apps can be wirelessly streamed to Meta Quest via Steam Link. Other popular solutions include Virtual Desktop and Air Link.

After the release on Meta Quest on April 25, 2024, Arcade Paradise VR is now also available on PC VR via Steam and Playstation VR 2.

In the game, you take on the role of Ashley, a rebellious teenager who goes against her father's wishes and prefers to buy and play arcade games instead of continuing the family business, a laundromat.

Despite her youthful rebelliousness, there is work to be done at the laundromat. Picking up chewing gum, washing clothes, cleaning toilets, and taking out the trash are the order of the day. On the plus side, you earn change that you can immediately spend on cool arcade machines.

In total, you can unlock 39 fully playable arcade machines from three decades of gaming history, which should keep you busy for over thirty hours. Each machine offers unique games based on retro hits like Pac-Man or Tetris

Just curious if anyone else with a Quest 3 (or even 2 I guess) is having this issue. Seems to have only started after v68 dropped. Is there a fix? The patch notes said I should be able to handle the connection from the system menu, but there's nothing to force them back on or turn them off; it's the same shit that's been in there since I got the thing.

Let's face it, the original Crystal was an expensive jack-of-all master-of-none abomination that should never have existed, and because the Light still uses the same form factor it's not much better, but people desperate for a solution to an under-served PCVR market will have to make due because there is nothing else at this price point which compares if your solely concern is PCVR gaming with good image quality.

Things I like about it:

-The screens are crisp and bright with good color and contrast. -The FOV and sweet spot are acceptable.

What I don't like about it:

-Pretty much everything else...

I haven't suffered any technical issues so that's good but It's clunky, its heavy, it's uncomfortable without aftermarket upgrades, the stock audio sucks (I'm able to use my over ear headphones after taking off the speaker posts at least), it gets very warm and sweaty on the face very quickly even for sit down applications, the built in tracking is inferior to the Quest, the lenses are inferior to the pancake lenses of the Quest, the smart smoothing isnt as good as the asynchronous spacewarp of the Quest.. I could go on but thats the gist..

The Quest 3 is just so nice and comfortable and easy to use even though the image is a bit fuzzier and duller. Sometimes I'm not even particularly impressed with the visuals of the PCL when I put it on, probably mostly due to the distortions from the aspheric lenses but also depending on the game I'm playing..

I knew what I was getting into and whether good or bad my expectations were fully met in every way. I'm just so tired of every single PCVR headset having so many compromises. I still have some time to decide on keeping this one and the problem is that the decision shouldn't be this hard...

The new VR Games Showcase comes from Jamie Feltham, UploadVR's former Senior Editor, and features "more than 15 games in a 20+ minute show." Announced last month, it includes debut gameplay footage for Hitman 3 VR Reloaded, new announcements from Flat2VR Studios, a first gameplay look at Escaping Wonderland from Beyond Frames Entertainment, and new looks at two upcoming games from Combat Waffle Studios - GRIM and Silent North.

According to media reports, Meta is in talks with the Indian technology company Jio about a possible license for its XR operating system Horizon OS.

According to The Information, three people familiar with the matter have stated that the negotiations revolve around the provision of Meta's Horizon software for a new VR headset that Jio would develop.

There are no further details about the project. Meta has so far declined to comment on the report, while Jio did not respond to requests for comment. Whether the talks will lead to a result remains to be seen

Previously confirmed in its post-launch roadmap last November, Dungeons of Eternity, the recipient of our 2023 best multiplayer VR game award, has introduced an 'Arachnophobia Mode' on Quest. Activating this in the settings menu swaps spider monsters for something "more loveable and friendly looking," according to Othergate Entertainment.

  • Ready at Dawn Studios, part of Oculus Studios, is closing permanently, effective immediately.
  • The studio produced some of the highest-rated VR games ever, including Lone Echo, Lone Echo 2, and Echo VR, as well as some PSP classics like God of War and Daxter.
  • Meta says that Ready at Dawn employees are encouraged to apply to other studios within the Oculus Studios umbrella.
  • The reduction was made to meet the new Reality Labs budgetary ceiling rather than as a proactive cost-saving initiative.

With the adapter priced at $60 and the headset now back to $550, PlayStation VR2 is now effectively a new $610 PC VR headset.

It's not quite that simple, though. In the package you'll find the adapter itself, a built-in USB cable, and a DC power adapter. But what you won't find is the DisplayPort 1.4 cable you need to connect the adapter to your PC. So if you don't have one of those lying around, add another $10 or so to the cost.

You'll also need Bluetooth on your PC to connect the controllers. If your motherboard doesn't have this built-in and you don't have a USB or PCI-E Bluetooth adapter, that adds another $15 or so to the cost.

Pico Interactive today announced it’s getting ready to reveal “a new product” this month, promising to boost your “MR/VR experience to the next level.”

The device is slated to get its big reveal on August 20th. An image obtained by Antony Vitillo of Skarred Ghost maintains it will be revealed at 14:00 China Standard Time (local time here).

The company also teased the new headset in a separate X post yesterday, with the hashtags ‘Pico 4’ and ‘Upgrade’.

According to a report from Korean tech outlet The Elec, Microsoft has contracted Samsung to supply micro OLED display panels for what is described as “next-generation mixed reality devices.”

Citing industry sources, the report maintains the order could reach into the “hundreds of thousands” of micro OLED displays, with such a Microsoft XR device reportedly slated to arrive as early as 2026.

Unlike Meta’s current line of Quest headsets, the alleged Microsoft headset will be used for “enjoying or watching content such as games or movies rather than the metaverse,” the report maintains (machine translated from Korean), potentially putting it in competition with Apple Vision Pro.

Since Microsoft’s abandonment of its WMR platform late last year and ongoing stagnation around its HoloLens AR platform, the company has mostly concentrated on smaller XR software projects

All things considered, Varjo XR-4 provided the highest quality VR image I've ever seen, approaching complete realism in virtual details. But it doesn't push forward field of view, at least not without unacceptable tradeoffs. And its passthrough is nothing better than what you'd get on a Quest 3 or Apple Vision Pro, and in some ways markedly worse.

Varjo plans to sell XR-4 to wealthy consumers starting later this year. But the gulf between the VR quality and passthrough is so great that I think Varjo should sell a "VR-4" without passthrough, focusing on the headset's strength as a VR headset without adding cost to support its weakness as a mixed reality device.

Just weeks away from the official launch of the Immersed Visor, a leaked image gives us a first look at the internal hardware of this slim and lightweight 4K VR headset. It's one of the most interesting headset designs we've seen, and it's expected to weigh less than your phone.

You take on the role of the eponymous Overseer who, with the help of an army of minions, must design a dungeon and build deadly traps to protect it from intruders. You can also cast powerful spells to defend your dungeon. These include fireballs, chain lightning, and skeleton raising.

Your demonic minions can build tunnels and chambers for you, but they need to be kept happy. The happier your minions are, the better your dungeon will run.

Underworld Overseer was designed from the ground up for virtual reality. Unlike the original, you can interact with the world and its creatures using your hands. Similar titles like the city builder Townsmen VR show how well this can work in VR.

Underworld Overseer will be released on October 31st, 2024 for Meta Quest and Steam.

The story in Zero Caliber 2 is somewhat perfunctory, so don't worry if you've never played the original game; you will catch up quickly. It's the not-too-distant future, and drinkable water has become the only real commodity. Society has all but crumbled as people fight to survive. This essentially translates to some heavily accented bad guys attacking some American-accented good guys while trying to seize precious water supplies.

Thankfully, you and your buddies are the paragons of military might, and it’s up to you to save the day. Oorah!

There are a few twists and turns along the way, but for the most part, the story exists as a vessel for cinematic action sequences, which Zero Caliber 2 delivers in spades. From fighting house to house through an overrun suburban setting to calling in airstrikes while clearing enemy trenches, Zero Caliber 2 delivers action hero power fantasy fresh out of a mid-90s action movie.

The campaign consists of 12 missions, each lasting roughly 20-30 minutes, depending on skill and difficulty. It delivers around 6 hours of high-quality adrenaline-fuelled escapism.
