The Nakba, commemorated annually on this day as "Nakba Day", was the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948 following Israel's creation. Nakba Day protests take place around the world and have been attacked by Israel.
The foundational events of the Nakba took place during and shortly after the 1947-1949 Palestine war, including 78% of Mandatory Palestine being declared as Israel, the exodus of 700,000 Palestinians, the depopulation and destruction of over 500 Palestinian villages and subsequent geographical erasure, the denial of the Palestinian right of return, and the creation of permanent, stateless Palestinian refugees.
Although May 15th had been used as an unofficial commemoration of the Nakba since 1949, Nakba Day was formalized in 1998 after Yasser Arafat proposed that Palestinians should mark the 50th anniversary of the Nakba during the First Intifada.
The Nakba was a key event in the development of Palestinian culture and is a foundational symbol of Palestinian identity, along with "Handala", a ten-year old cartoon character developed by Naji al-Ali; the keffiyeh, a checkered black and white scarf worn around the head; and the "symbolic key" (many Palestinian refugees have kept the keys to the homes they were forced to flee).
On Nakba Day 2011, Palestinians and other Arabs from the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Syria marched towards their respective borders, or ceasefire lines and checkpoints in Israeli-occupied territories, to mark the event. At least twelve Palestinians and supporters were killed and hundreds wounded as a result of shootings by the Israeli Army.

I recently moved out of my major city to a suburb (we wanted to buy a place and no way we could afford more than a 1bed apt in the city). The way suburbanites manicure their lawns has jokerfied me. people spending hundreds of dollars a month for services to come out and fertilize/pesticide, out there mowing/weed wacking every couple of days, etc all to maintain what is effectively a weed that kills biodiversity. if humanity survives im certain we will look back on lawns as the greatest misallocation of resources in human history. my wife and i are working to plant a ton and do almost nothing about our dandelion riddled lawn

Nope. If anything it's worse in the summer cause fucking everyone is up at 7 mowing their own lawn, so there's like 15 mowers going at once all morning.
Last Saturday I just wanted to have my morning coffee in my backyard and this completely ruined it. Can't wait until these things are outlawed.

Fescue grasses are much hardier and more drought tolerant than most lawn grasses. Some varieties only "need' to be cut twice a season. Find some clover seed that's innoculated with symbiotic grass fungus and it'll do it's nitrogen fixing magic and keep everything green and healthy.
Buy the fescue seed and clover in spring and in autumn, hand spread it over the kentucky bluegrass or whatever. The new grass will choke out the old grass over several seasons with no further effort on your part and eventually you'll have a lawn that takes care of it self with 0 intervention and is full of clover that bees can eat.
The result is a hell of a lot more sustainable, much hardier, has bee food, and will piss off your neighbors but not break city ordinances (unless they specify some grass species).
We're in the northern US so I was thinking of using creeping phlox to slowly replace my lawn, but I like this idea too. it seems a bit easier and will probably piss of the neighbors a bit less lol
