There could be a regular shower floor drain in addition to this, with the floor drain having a lever like a tub or a cover. This one sets a maximum level and prevents water from overflowing out of the shower basin, allowing you to soak your feet while showering.

Personally, I think it's brilliant, and not much more work when making a shower stall.
